MNML SSGS returns to Air after hosting Silent Servant last October. Continuing our mission of advancing quality, innovative electronic music, this time we welcome two techno heroes from Berlin: Adam X and Ancient Methods.
Adam X has been pushing a purist vision of techno and industrial music since the early 1990s. Through decades of experience as a DJ, co-owning the Sonic Groove records store in New York, and running the Sonic Groove label, Adam X has developed a very deep knowledge of electronic music, which is reflected in his powerful and varied DJ sets. He is also an accomplished producer, most recently releasing the well-received “Irreformable” album in 2014 as Adam X, as well as the “The Redacted Files” EP on L.I.E.S. under his ADMX-71 guise. This followed on from his successful Traversable Wormhole project, which were compiled and remixed on CLR. Quite simply, Adam is a man who really knows his music.
‘Pitch black techno war funk’ remains the best description for the sound of Ancient Methods. The music is certainly heavy, but it always retains a strong dancefloor groove. Through 7 distinctive solo EPs, as well as collaborating with Regis to form Ugandan Methods, Ancient Methods has developed a fearsome reputation for producing some of the highest-grade techno about. More recently, Ancient Methods has been exploring EBM and industrial through remixes of Powell, Black Egg and Bourbonese Qualk. These influences and sounds are blended together in his distinctive DJ sets, drawing on his many years as a DJ and former resident of Tresor Berlin.
The afterhours slot will again be handled by Future Terror’s Haruka, who has been establishing himself at the forefront of Japan’s next generation of techno DJs. Completing the mainfloor lineup will be the co-founder of MNML SSGS, Chris SSG, who will be opening the night with his unique blend of experimental and techno music.
Once again, the electrifying FISH crew will be taking over the lounge, with DJ sets from Not Not Fun’s Sapphire Slows, as well as Michihiko Ishidomaru, Chiro and Yu. And for NoMad, we are very happy to welcome the Diskotopia crew, which have established themselves as one of the most exciting contemporary labels in Japan. Leading them will be A Taut Line, who recently released his second album, "Mutual Prints", which has been well received. Joining him will be two other core members of Diskotopia: Am Rhein and BD1982.
Adam X and Ancient Methods are two artists that MNML SSGS have had a long connection with. Their powerful, uncompromising take on electronic music is exactly the kind of approach we love. They will be supported by some of Tokyo’s most interesting and worthwhile voices. So make sure to come join us, this will be another very proper night.
