  • Producer QB Smith and pianist Yonela Mnana have made an album under the name of Sun-Doe. Now they assemble a magical group of fellow souls to bring some of these, and other songs, to life on stage. At the forefront of the list of their assembled friends, is the South African elder statesman Abbey Cindi, of course of Malombo, a flute player known for the deeply affecting and spiritual sounds he made with Julian Bahula and Philip Tabane amongst others. When Peter Makurube urged QB to make himself aware of the work of these great contributors to African culture, baba Abbey's tone was to lodged itself somewhere deep, and a seed he had no idea of, was planted. Sun-Doe, we maybe should explain, is an African woman spirit, a very modern Hermes-like messenger, who today manifests in the virtual realm, an internet angel, rather than one of dreams, and she has come telling us to invent the future. With QB a music producer, DJ, and educator who has produced in the region of fifty records, known as much for his house music contributions as for soul and jazz practice, and who nowadays spends his days honing an electronic instrumentalist practice, and Yonela, the rarest kind of expressive piano player, running the dynamic gamut from impossibly hot flurries of tones that teeter on the edge of tripping over themselves, that then fluidly dissolve into meditational zones and drones, a gifted listener, player, and thoughtful human, they have created as Sun-Doe an inevitably warm fusion of soul, jazz, african, latin, broken beat, with notions of science fiction and philosophy, and a leftist agenda of peace and equality. This event, titled Sun-Doe's Magic Ritual, borrows from pianist Harry Whitaker's record, which opens with the chanted refrain "magic ritual is in opposition to all uncreative activity". And so it is that every song of the evenings performance will be offered with a message and a spirit of love and healing, and a sound to match.
