We're back at Beaver Works on Saturday 21st April after Easter holidays for the first of our Day & Night Parties! Joining us on the terrace will be German/Kiwi double act Snacks, who will be treating us to their soulful and upbeat live show to get things started. In the basement, we are excited to announce we will play host to legendary British selector Atjazz and German disco master Soundstream. In the main room we will be welcoming Cologne-based purveyor of melodic techno Barnt, who will be playing alongside longtime friend of Flux, the ever-energetic Konstantin Sibold.

From his misspent youth skateboarding through the small-towns of Northeast England to running a successful independent record label, in-between producing and remixing for a wealth of talent around the world, Martin “Atjazz” Iveson has become synonymous with the highest levels of style, production and innovation in the independent music scene. Arriving into the Midlands in the early nineties, Martin cut his teeth by landing a day job scoring for computer game studio Core Design Ltd on their worldwide smash-hit ‘Tomb Raider’ series. Producing under the Atjazz moniker (taken from a Topcat cartoon episode) on his own label amongst others, he began to see success with his early works; ‘Story’, ‘That Something’ and ‘Labfunk”, and his fanbase grew until he became known throughout the underground scene as an original and emotional force to be reckoned with. Martin has also been a prolific remixer and collaborator throughout his 20-year career, reworking and partnering on releases for artists across the globe. The list of which is as impressive as it is comprehensive: Nitin Sawhney, Bob Sinclar, Gilles Peterson, Jazzanova, The RAH Band, Karizma, Osunlade, Zed Bias & Omar to name but a few (even being requested to rework Henri Mancini’s ‘The Pink Panther Returns” for EMI Records). Fans will recognise that the Atjazz sound is very personal and he puts a part of himself into every track he produces or remixes. This sound has become so renowned that he is often sought out by top level vocalists and producers to work on their own projects. Due to industry challenges, Martin decided to set his label Mantis Recordings free in 2009, but from the ashes of this came the phoenix that is named Atjazz Record Company (affectionately referred to as ARCo). This diverse label concentrates on Martin’s productions and collaborations, and the successes achieved therein have helped the label soar to great new heights. He has also recently started releasing tracks under his real name, rather than the Atjazz brand, taking a more introspective swing and freeing himself from any boundaries he might feel burdened with as Atjazz. Stack all this up and add it to his recent success collaborating with Jullian Gomes on 2013's hit Album ‘The Gift The Curse’ the future is looking ever brighter for this mentally experimental, inspirationally prolific and hugely respected mainstay of the UK independent music scene.
Cologne based artist Daniel Asorge aka Barnt is one of the few new faces in the global electronic music scene whose music makes a fine distinction and turns established formulas against the grain. Besides being a DJ for over 20 years, Barnt is also a producer with releases on labels like Hinge Finger and Cómeme already under his belt. Furthermore, he is co-founder and co-owner of the label Magazine that he established with his old North German friends Jens-Uwe Beyer and Crato in 2010. A long time DJ from Cologne who shaped his technical skills in the scratch scene, Barnt has been known to insiders as one of the most original and open-minded dance DJs in Europe. A regular at Berlin's iconic Berghain, co-founder of Magazine and 1/3 of Cologne Tape, Barnt's increasingly explosive solo output led him to release 'Geffen' on Comeme's legendary Power Of Now EP. Leading many DJs end of year polls, the track also reached number 14 in RA's top 50 tracks of 2012. His Tunsten release on Cómeme, Matias Aguayo’s experimental and at times avant-garde label, was one of the most weird and wonderful slices of wonky and wired electronic gibberish we’ve heard this side of Mr Aguayo himself’s record collection. The reaction to Optimo dropping it the Boiler Room was huge, causing an immediate scrabble for an ident. We look forward to welcoming Barnt to Leeds.
Every musician aspires to communicate with audiences in their own unique language. Konstantin Sibold’s cultured approach to performance and production has forged a style that is both distinctive and personal. Born in Stuttgart in 1987, music in a diverse array of forms was an enduring backdrop to Konstantin’s youth. In 2009, whilst a student engineer, he became the youngest resident of legendary Stuttgart club, Rocker 33 and there, two years later, Konstantin and his close friend Leif Müller started their own event series, Common Sense People. The emphasis at these parties is on providing an intimate insight into one artist, with extended sets and focused programming the basis for all their events. Performances by DJ Koze, Roman Flügel and Levon Vincent have earned their parties a justifiable reputation across the German underground. This appreciation of truly narrative performance is pervasive, as Konstantin himself is becoming notorious for his expansive long sets. Appearances from Panorama Bar to Trouw to Concrete to Womb Tokyo have only cemented his status as an innovative DJ, able to imbue any night with a pulsating energy. As a producer, Konstantin’s burgeoning reputation led to him being voted ‘Newcomer of the Year 2013' by the readers of Groove Magazine, ahead of other lauded acts from Recondite to Disclosure. In 2010 his debut vinyl “Neuland” received significant support from the Innervisions & Kompakt family. In 2011, his classic house release “Leif/Mariam” drew widespread acclaim, with tastemaker Move D acknowledging in an interview it to be one of his favourite tracks of that year. Additional releases followed on Caramelo and Snork Enterprises, before “Madeleine” attracted the attention of Dixon and Âme. Its eventual release on Innervisions ultimately propelled Konstantin onto the world stage. Subsequent remix requests for renowned pop acts followed, including Lana Del Rey, Gus Gus and Röyksopp. Konstantin's remix for DJ Yellow & Flowers And Sea Creatures became a massive club hit, receiving support from people such as Sven Väth, Ricardo Villalobos, Dixon and Tale Of Us and was voted to #2 'Remix of the Year 2013' in Groove Magazine. Konstantin’s extensive back-catalogue features releases on a series of prestigious labels, from Kompakt to DFA to Mute records. Konstantin has repeatedly shown he pays little attention to genres and pigeon-holing. He moves fleet-footed between musical categories, with a characteristic confidence that his quintessential style will shine through, whatever the musical template. In the studio, just as in the DJ booth, Konstantin lives and breathes the idea that music is fluid and that setting constraints based on convention and expectation will only suffocate musical personality. Frank Timm a.k.a. Soundhack alias Soundstream serves cuisine instead of fast food. But before he reached that state, the true-school Berliner had to graduate from the city’s club boot camp. Awestruck by Berlin’s basements and industrial places, where techno was in its early-nineties prime, Soundstream was overwhelmed by Detroit’s beauty and Chicago’s roughness. Unsurprising, he soon agitated in the coordinate system of the world-renowned record store Hard Wax. An institution that also distributes his labels Soundstream and Soundhack. The first one takes care of Timm’s never-ending love for disco and refined house music (take the ear candy of ‘Love Jam’ for example), the latter is dedicated to cut-up and loop adventures that are better described with folly than the customary house and techno signs. Therefore the scalpel is one of his typical tools of the trade. He chops, dismembers, deconstructs and mills - until he drops. However, he never creates Frankenstein’s monster and does not fall for the risks of this mode of operation: Sophistication and consciousness, safe from harm and also from being nerdy. “DJ tools with an attitude”, as Dr. Dre would say. The same goes for his ‘band’ Smith’n’Hack. Together with his peer and friend Errorsmith, Mr. Soundhack creates amazing long players like ‘Tribute’ that takes a bow in front of disco’s vast history or incredible remixes. Just listen what they did to Ricardo Villalobos’ ‘Easy Lee’ or Herbert’s ‘Moving Like A Train’. Stripes of italo disco in the one case and a future classic paint of gold in the other. On his own, Timm’s revisions for Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir, the Olympian Rhythm & Sound duo or Auto Repeat might be the most remarkable ones. His appearances as a live act or DJ are also outstanding. A look into his box reveals lovely disco 12-inches, dirty Chicago house, immortal club classics and dew-fresh jams. All blended, mixed and sliced together with style and grace. His brand new Soundstream live set literally “Tears down the house”. Using a mixture of his “Greatest hits” as well as new unreleased “Soon to be hits”, he presents the listener with a solid, funky, “Sure to get you on the dance floor” sound. Whether live or spinning vinyl, be sure to put on your dancing shoes, your feet won’t forgive you in the morning. You can also catch him behind the machines under the Smith’n’Hack guise, which has just released 2 new 12-inches.
Snacks is New Zealand/German duo Rene Corbett & Aljoscha Babel. New House music produced with heart and soul. Formed in a smokey table tennis bar, solidified over 1 or 2 good German beers and the sound refined during many long hours spent in Aljoscha's synth filled Berlin studio. The unique combination of Aljoscha's love for hardware and Hip Hop, Rene's Jazz, Soul & Funk background brings together a sound rich in history and full in musicality. Manifested in an exciting live show with percussion, vintage synths and always centered around a groove and swing that has dance floors sweating and smiling till the early hours. The first song was composed during a 10 hour bus ride to Warsaw. A jazz drum solo inspired groove which when fully developed went on to become one of the strongest songs of the 2014 summer. Featuring regularly in sets & charts of Detroit Swindle, Prosumer, Star Slinger, Ben UFO, Kraak & Smaak and many more great artists. The sound being described as house music in a class all of it's own. Keep a close eye on Snacks this year and expect big things. With EP's on Dutch label Boogie Angst, House Of Disco London and Magic Jams Germany expected 2016 will be a big year for the two Berliners.
