Berlin & Decoded Magazine Pres Alex Niggemann - Brighton Music Conference

  • We are pleased to be back for this year's Brighton Music Conference as an official partner and event. Last year was incredible and this year is going to be even bigger. We have a massive lineup for you as we return to our HQ the Green Door Store. Alex Niggemann (AEON, Compost Records, Freerange Records, Last Night On Earth, Poker Flat Recordings. Watergate Records) Alex Niggemann is well known for gracing the decks at the world’s finest clubbing establishments, an ever-growing list that, in Europe, includes Watergate, Berghain/Panorama Bar in his home city, London’s clubbing institution Fabric, and the White Isle’s hedonistic centrepiece Space Ibiza. Alex’s DJ sets are loved by clubbers everywhere, his non-stop global touring schedule now takes him from Europe to North America, from South America to Australia and on to Asia, entertaining sell-out crowds all night long. Electronic music doesn’t really have borders – for many artists its essential defining element is freedom. Both as a DJ and a producer, Alex Niggemann has set out to further blur any remaining boundaries between house and techno, gravitating towards the melancholic atmospheres that he loves and avoiding petty sub-genre pigeonholing as much as possible. A classically trained pianist who gave up the ivory keys to follow his technological dream, it was his mother pushing a young Alex hard to practice piano every day that built strong foundations and his brother’s expansive vinyl collection in the early 90’s, that opened his ears to his future calling. He studied audio engineering (graduating in 2007) whilst running errands for DJ-T and the influential Get Physical imprint, a situation that led to his first ever remix (Booka Shade “Darko”) in 2006. Alex continued to produce with a string of releases following suit with “Assign Me” (Sportclub, 2008). “Black Rose EP” for Supernature (2009), the “Makayuni EP” for Nick Curly’s 8bit Records, “Lately” (Pokerflat, 2011), and a critically acclaimed album “Paranoid Funk” (Poker Flat 2012). As his global profile as a DJ and producer continued to grow at an exponential rate, the need for another representative artistic platform became apparent. AEON, launched in April 2013, and mirrors the peak time DJ sets that Alex plays. October 2014 saw Alex Niggemann’s “Abaton” (AEON) highlight his affinity for texture and genre-defying sound, mixing ethereal chords with stark synths for a truly goose bump inducing aural experience. His “Materium” (Poker Flat) release, one of the 10 most charted tracks of 2014 on RA, stands as Alex’s biggest release so far, its genre surfing sensibilities making it a sure-fire future timeless classic. Sasha’s long time love and support for Alex’s music resulted in him releasing the luscious “Earth Symphony” on Last Night On Earth (2014), to yet more deserved critical acclaim. Meanwhile, “Sorrow” (Watergate, 2014), saw Alex make his debut on the label of the world-renowned Berlin nightclub he loves to play (every 2-3 months since 2010). A beautiful “Afterhours Mix” for Pete Tong’s legendary BBC Radio 1 show, further cemented Alex’s status as one of the most exciting global artists of the future. Alex has continued to release over the last few years on his own label and others with worldwide tours and busy schedules finally bringing him to us in Brighton :D Timo Garcia (Kittball Records, elrow music, Exploited Rec, Mother Recordings, Compost Records, Toolroom Records) Timo Garcia is a name that needs little introduction. Now a firm Berlin-Brighton resident, Timo's sound straddles the fine line between underground darling and big room, big tune dance floor arsonist, his numerous releases on the circuit’s biggest and best labels has been well documented including releases on ElRow Music, Exploited, Noir, OFF, Compost, Lost Records, Skint, Southern Fried, Stealth, Yoshitoshi, Nervous, Leena, Cr2 & Toolroom & even Hed Kandi. His consistency in the studio first culminated in ‘Wonderlust Bug’; his acclaimed debut artist album with some of the world’s biggest names queuing up to recommend it… [SASHA] “The Hang Drum track is amazing – as is Release, Wonderlust and Lady Luck and the mixed album flows wonderfully too, keep it up mate”. [LAURENT GARNIER] “Great work… Great for big room business.” [TIMO MAAS] “Great album…v trippy and great variety!”. [M.A.N.D.Y.] “Solid collection of tracks. Well done!” But talk is cheap, action stands out, and Timo comes up trumps again! His release on Yoshitoshi graced the Beatport top 10 Tech charts for well over five months with many world class DJs citing it in their personal top 10’s. His deft touch can be heard on remixes of such luminaries as Leftfield, Coldcut, Justice, DJ Pierre, Louis Vega, Robert Owens, Danny Howells and Ian Brown and he is constantly on the lookout for ways to add his inimitable sound to wide-ranging projects including a 33 track ambient album under his downtempo ‘T_Mo’ guise. Hotel Es Vivé Ibiza released two compilation CDs produced by T_Mo highlighting his chillout music production prowess and sensational track selection. Whether you like your music to be played in the comfort of your own home, in grimy underground sweatholes, or in extravagant and celebrious locales, the sublime and sensual sounds of Timo Garcia are guaranteed to deliver. Alice Clark (Selador, Cyclic Records) Decoded Magazine: ‘Future Leader 2018’ DJ MAG: ' One to watch, a rising star in Ibiza.' Monki (BBC Radio 1): ' Alice has got a clear cut sound. Obviously inspired by the music heard by thousands every summer on the dance mecca island of Ibiza, her mixes are smooth and grooves perfectly together." Derived from her influences of the romanian sub-genre Alice Clark has developed her own unique take on deep dubby, groove driven micro house entwined with the drive and subtitles of minimal tech. Alice fell down the music rabbit hole in her childhood learning the piano, guitar, drums and the sax at a young age, so that reading and writing music became almost second nature. “I guess it was a natural progression when I started DJing, they both went hand in hand,” she says. She recalls “recording lines from all the instruments to make a track. Not sure the neighbours were exactly pleased about this, but it was my little ‘music cave’.” Today, Alice is a fast-rising international DJ who is known for working the dancefloor wherever she plays. She divides her time between summer’s in Ibiza and touring globally in the winter months. POoK (Berlin - Brighton, Codesouth.FM, SIZE., Dino Audio, Nightshift Records) Inspired by the beats of many a dark dancefloor, POoK “the man wiv big hands” has a style that grew roots in the underground Bristol and Welsh free party scenes. Over the years the dancefloors have been moved with precision at the likes of Turnmills, The Egg, SE1, The Volks Nightclub, Concorde 2 and plenty of festivals including Waveform, Noisily and Paris Tech. Back on the mic, with his charismatic random wit and banter, POoK has listeners tuning in worldwide for his weekly night radio show on Codesouth.fm. as well as being a firm fan favourite and resident with Berlin-Brighton. 2018 saw POoK release on DJ Markus Saarländer's new Brighton label Dino Audio and Sami Kubu's Nightshift Records Techno imprint gaining support for his Lola EP on Dino Audio from the likes of Dave Seaman, Davide Squillace, Aly & Fila, Paride Saraceni, Danny Tenaglia, Paco Osuna, Cid Inc, Solarstone, Soul Button and many more. Two strangers enter a toilet at a Pan Pot gig, they emerge as friends, and two years later are ready to start showing the city of Brighton and the rest of the world their unique style of dance floor groovers. Luke and Owen, aka Monica, have been members of the dance floor generation since their late teens. With a musical choice that is sometimes considered to sit just outside what the majority of people in Brighton play, and a love for the Berlin sound, it wasn't long before they were offered their first taste of limelight, when the head honcho of Nightshift Records, Sami Kubu, offered them a slot on her bi-monthly podcast. The podcast was to be released as a Halloween special in 2016. The mix was an emotional and moody eclectic mix of music both Luke and Owen love with groove from start to finish. It was well received by both listeners and Nightshift records themselves and building on their success secured a weekly radio show on Codesouth FM. Since then Monica have been involved in numerous Berlin-Brighton events and completed a Berlin Mixtapes Guest mix for us too.
