  • Online platform and cultural operator The Attic presents its first music residency: The Attic InContext it will take place between June 21 - 25 in the pitoresque mountain resort Slănic Moldova, Bacău District, Romania and consist of a series of live concerts, DJ sets, workshops, movie screenings, part of them to take place in a salt mine and to be broadcasted online through our facebook page. The 4 days event is comissioned by InContext Slanic Moldova, a one month residency programme initiated by Alina Teodorescu (London-based Romanian artist) aiming to inspire contemporary artists to develop their practice and create work in non-studio and non-gallery spaces, through engaging with new geographies, audiences and socio-economic contexts. The residency seeks to create an environment which is favorable to the intercultural processes that take place in the global world of the Anthropocene. Man and his actions have become a transforming agent in the geological processes, in climatic changes and ecosystems. Music is able to generate a sensorial space for testing, perceiving and understanding these transformations. For four days, international as well as Romanian musicians will experience interculturality from a sonic perspective, as well as the metabolic interaction between man and nature. They will explore various approaches of Indian music, classic as well as contemporary, while experimenting with several instruments. The residency space will become a resource for dialogue and fusion in itself, the process culminating with a concert at the Târgu Ocna salt mine with Austrian musician Stefan Fraunberger, who will lead a comissioned ensemble formed by Romanian musicians Laurențiu Coțac, Bogdana Dima, Diana Miron, Sian Brie and Călin Torsan. Berlin based artist and musician Melanie Velarde also joins the salt mine line up with a special performance, precedeed by 2 other improv acts by Micleușanu M and Sașa Liviu Stoianovici & Dan Michiu. The concerts from the salt mine on June 23 (14.00-19.00) are broadcasted online on The Attic’s facebook page. Another essential component of the residency is a series of open-air and indoor concerts performed by Romanian and foreign artists, spanning over 3 days at various landmarks in Slănic, accompanied by performances, DJ sets and workshops with the youth of Slănic area, examining the relationship between sound, nature and humanity’s footprint on this planet. Mobility partner: Țiriac Auto. ABOUT THE ATTIC The Attic is a platform of analysis, study, representation, archiving and dissemination of certain musical cultural products. Although the common subject of The Attic's cases is music, our aim is to transcend the environment and to investigate how the sound is modeled by the specific socio-cultural context. We are interested in authentic, original, innovative and substantial product. Music is the most presently artistic medium of expression and most easily assimilated by different cultures. The Attic mainly investigates certain cases where music has not benefited from exposure to the general public, despite its innovative content or techniques. We consider that a presentation of these cases is more than necessary to contribute to integrating the perspective of the musical universe and its reflection in the everyday life. The Attic is active as an online music magazine, which focuses on a wide spectrum of music genres and investigates different cultures from all around the world. The editorial content narrates empirical listening experiences from different collaborators, through reports, features and interviews with various artists, composers and ensembles, music reviews and audio podcasts. The Attic is also the organizer of the annual multicultural festival Outernational Days and the Outernational series of events from Bucharest, with nomad offices in different parts of the world and a permanent bases in Bucharest, Romania (editorial/events) and Oslo, Norway (technical/editorial). The editorial approach follows a quarterly theme which is picked and expanded, in the form of various types of articles, podcast or video recordings. We are always looking for contributors, so please feel free to get in touch for any kind of content submission, partnership proposals or any ideas you want to share with us.
