『東京クラブカルチャーの象徴が愛する仲間とともに復活』
10年前のこの日、トップクラスの知名度を誇る東京のクラブSpace Lab Yellowが、人気絶頂の中でその歴史に幕を下ろした。Frankie Knuckles、Derrick Carter、Kerri Chandler、Larry Heardなど、ハウスシーンのありとあらゆるレジェンドたちを迎えてきたYellowは、クロージングパーティで30時間という超ロングセットを同店ともっとも縁深いDJのひとりに託した。Francois Kだ。
おそらくシーンの中の誰よりも長いキャリアを誇る世界的DJの彼は、ディスコやハウスだけに限定されない多くのダンスミュージックで革新的役割を果たしてきた。Paradise GarageやStudio 54の席巻していた80年代ニューヨークの当事者であり、パーティ Body & Soulを始動した90年代にそれまでの常識を書き換えた存在だ。
そのFrancois Kが伝説的なクラブの閉店から10年の時を経て、あのときと同じ6月23日に帰ってくる。さらにこの日は、Yellowの世界観やFrancois KのDJにふさわしい探求心の持ち主Yoshinori Hayashiもラインアップに加わる。近年を代表する腕利きのレフトフィールダーである彼は、リズム、サンプリング音、サウンドプロセッシングなどの多様な制作要素を織り交ぜて異世界の音楽を生み出している。その大胆な音楽性は、”Going Good”や”Jinn”といったレーベルからのリリースだけでなく、ダンサブルな構造と謎に満ちたサウンドをしなやかに融合させる予測不可能なDJスタイルにも表れている。
Yellowのスピリットを知るUnited Future Organization (U.F.O.) から矢部直に加え、日本テクノ/トランスシーンのレジェンドDJ K.U.D.O. aka ARTIMANや、Francois Kとも縁深いToshiyuki Gotoの参加も決定している。全盛期のYellowにレギュラーを務めた彼らなら当時のアツい空気を忠実に再現してくれるに違いない。さらに、彼らに通じる東京クラブシーンの熱気を記録した写真集 "90 Nights"で話題の藤代冥砂が、未収録写真を店内に展示。現代と過去を結びつける貴重な一夜を演出する。
「A true Tokyo icon returns with its most treasured guest」
Ten years ago, to the day, Tokyo lost one of its most famous nightclubs when Yellow shut its doors, but it went out in style. After welcoming any house legend you care to mention from Frankie Knuckles and Derrick Carter to Kerri Chandler and Larry Heard, the club bowed out with a marathon 30 hour set from one the DJs most intimately related with the Space Lab Yellow party – Francois K.
A world-class DJ and producer for longer than nearly anyone else in the game, Francois K has been instrumental in many of dance music’s great epochs, from disco to house and beyond. He was there when the Paradise Garage and Studio 54 ruled New York in the 80s, and then re-wrote the rulebook all over again when he helped launch the Body & Soul parties in the 90s.
Now he’s returning to Tokyo ten years to the day that Yellow closed, to help commemorate the legendary club. In keeping with the adventurous spirit of Space Lab Yellow, and indeed Francois K as a DJ, he’ll be joined by Yoshinori Hayashi. The Japanese artist is one of the brightest and most unusual talents to emerge in recent times, fusing together otherworldly tapestries of rhythm, found sounds, instrumentation and other sonic matter. Beyond his releases on Going Good, Jinn and many more, Hayashi brings his wayward spirit to DJing, fusing danceable forms and other more esoteric sounds with a graceful yet unpredictable approach.
Maintaining the original spirit of Yellow, Tadashi Yabe from the now-defunct jazz funk project United Future Organization will also be appearing. Alongside him are Japanese techno and trance legend DJ K.U.D.O. aka ARTMAN and Francois’Wave Music affiliate Toshiyuki Goto. The three DJs were all regular fixtures at Yellow during its peak years, so they’re sure to faithfully conjure up the atmosphere of the club. Completing this special occasion is a photo exhibition by Meisa Fujishiro, whose latest photographic documentary 90 Nights has put that very period on the map again. It all heightens an expectation for a memorable night that joins the dots between today’s musical landscape and what has influenced it.
