  • TURISMO AVENUE BY JOHN VAN DER MIJL WILL BE AVAILABLE ON CD AT LAUNCHING PARTY AT TWENTY FIFTH (FRIDAY, 27/07) Avenue De La House will support Pepaya Records in the upcoming event “Turismo Avenue Showcase Party”. The event will take place at Twenty Fifth which is located on Wijaya (South Jakarta) this Friday (27/07). John van der Mijl is going to showcase his exclusive live DJ set based on his debut album material. There will be good friends who will DJ-ing and share the deck for the sake of album launch: Heru (Future10/Sunset People Project), Byanos (Delahouse), Sattle/Adder (Javabass), De La House’s resident DJ, and more. Regarding the launching party, John van der Mijl stated that the party will be “too fast for House, too slow for Drum & Bass”.John van der Mijl grew up listening to UK underground sound, from the likes of of 90􀀀s trip hop, shoegaze, and IDM. It led him to have a keen interest in jungle, garage, ambient, and UK bass. He is an artist who is growing from the community of a closely knit group of people around him. John is known not only for his participation in several notable collectives, such as Java Bass and Trash Tapes but also for tracks he put on the various labels, such as: Trash Tapes, Rokum Records, Pepaya Records, Darker Than Wax, and Double Deer. His work is not a stylistic one, but rather something in direct conflict with the urge for a more open reception from wider audience. This condition make him work with unique approach to dance music – or all music – and to the Jakarta’s scene itself. His debut album Turismo Avenue is released under Pepaya Records this April with liner notes by Jerome Chandra of Javabass. The opening track “Numero 9”, that also served as the first single, invites the listener into a complex and jungle-like drum universe. On “Jukee”, the drums sometimes fade into the background to make space for strange melodies. He also shows his ability to create stunning soundscapes with a proper dose of Detroit techno heavy kicks and hi-hats in “Fero” and “Borderline”. The tracks on the album are not taking you on a certain journey trip because of its variety of sounds and universes. They rarely go anywhere, and that is what makes Turismo Avenue interesting. You can drown yourself in the complex rhythmic compositions and enchanting soundscapes; all you have to do is float along and end up with dreamy feeling of “Kata”, the album’s last track. Although Turismo Avenue became an album by accident (it was supposed to be a 5 tracks EP), it happens to work well as a complete piece. Pepaya Records added more creative directions to John van der Mijl during the process that lead to production of 3 new tracks: “Hari Esok”, “Pepaya Acid”, and “Kata”. Turismo Avenue is an album that floats effortlessly in and out of genres and styles. The productions which John did on Turismo Avenue are, as expected, of stellar quality. It help the album moves effortlessly between 90’s broken-beat, squelching house, ambient driven techno, melancholic jungle, and exquisite jazzy melodies. The common denominator is the crystal-clear sounding production which delivers modern and refreshing species in dance music. One foot in the past, one foot in the future, and beyond the present – an appropriate and suitable addition to Asia’s electronic music repertoire. Come feel the breeze of Turismo Avenue!
