West Coast hip hop pioneer Peanut Butter Wolf brings an evening a raw beats and old-school DJing to Hangar
Stones Throw Records founder Peanut Butter Wolf brings his iconic, lo-fi, West-Coast beats to Hangar for an evening filled with hip hop in its purest form. Let this pioneer of the LA sound take you straight back to the core elements of the genre, with raw percussion, earnest bars and vinyl DJing.
Founded in 1996, Stones Throw Records has become one of LA’s most reputable and critically acclaimed independent labels. Mainly, due to the integral role it has played in the development of artists such as Anderson .Paak, J Dilla, Madlib, Dam-Funk, Knxwledge, MNDSGN and many more. Undoubtedly, the landscape of West Coast hip hop would be vastly different if not for the creative integrity and fiercely independent attitude of Peanut Butter Wolf and this hip hop label.
Also taking the stage will be Detroit-born producer Tall Black Guy, who will deliver his minimal, jazz-inspired beats that have garnered heavy praise from Gilles Peterson and Lefto to name but a few.
Furthermore, rising hip hop producer Eric Lau, who has worked alongside the likes of Erykah Badu, DJ Jazzy Jeff and De La Soul will be in attendance. His melancholy yet wholly gripping beats evoke the works of early East-Coast pioneers whilst simultaneously pushing hip hop into exciting new territory that distinctly reflects the UK jazz scene.
Further still, Jitwam will be constructing his transcendental, psychedelic hip hop beats live in front of your very eyes using a host of electronic hardware. Born in Northern India, but having lived in New York, New Zealand and everywhere in between, Jitwam creates culturally eclectic beats that will transfix your body, mind and soul.
Opening the show will be Prophet, an underground funk musician from San-Francisco and long-time Stones Throw Records artist. Having previously opened for Snoop Dogg and collaborated with MNDSGN, you’ll want to make sure you get down early to catch his infectiously groovy set.
