  • Fanø Free Folk Festival is back – this time with a very special 10 year anniversary edition! LINE-UP 2019 (more TBA - scroll down for full band descriptions) Stick in the Wheel (UK) Kapela Maliszów (PL) Comaneci (IT) Bona Fide (DK) Groupa (SE) Gate (NZ) Own Road Band (DK) Dagny i Forsen (SE) Praed (LB) We're so grateful for all the support we've received through the years since we launched the festival as a crazy experiment in 2010. Since then we feel Fanø has become a home for the music that we love and an always welcoming harbour where different folk music traditions and free form experiments from all over the world meet and thrive. We think that that is worth celebrating, and celebrate we'll do, when we return to Sønderho with the 10 year anniversary edition of Fanø Free Folk Festival. The very festival takes place 26-28 July 2019. As always the heart of the festival will be Sønderho Forsamlingshus with various events (talks, walks, acoustic concerts and more) taking place in other locations in and around Sønderho. Because of the anniversary we plan to do some special events and shows on Fanø in the days up to the actual festival. So why not plan a whole week's stay at the beautiful island? Tickets - ALL PRE-SALE TICKETS ARE SOLD OUT: Partout tickets will be sold in advance and as always there's a very limited amount of tickets on sale! 3-day partout ticket - 400 dkk + ticket fee. SOLD OUT. To continue a tradition from last year, locals who live on Fanø get free access on the last day of the festival (28. July). Children up to 12 years get free access to the festival in the company of an adult holding a ticket. Please note: Partout tickets give access to all concerts and other events during the festival period from 26-28. July. Tickets do not give access to accomodation. For camping options, we recommend Camping Klitten which is in convenient walking distance from the festival venue. For other options such as holiday houses, holiday apartments, B&B etc. we recommend you to contact Visit Fanø. Fanø Free Folk Festival #10 is kindly supported by Statens Kunstfond and PULS. Band descriptions: Stick In The Wheel (UK) https://stickinthewheel.bandcamp.com/ East London folk band and four-times BBC Radio 2 Folk Award nominees Stick in the Wheel have taken the British folk scene by storm with their two full-length albums and incendiary live performances of traditional folk music. This band is fiercely breathing new life into the culture and practice of folk musik for new generations while seamlessly blending it with their own song material. Fronted by singer Nicola Kearey and guitarist/producer Ian Carter, Stick in the Wheel have become known for Kearey’s authentic delivery and for creating culturally and politically switched-on music with its roots firmly embedded in the genre's traditional, working-class heritage. Stick in the Wheel examines rituals and cycles, ghosts and death, land and place, thieves and beggars, rage and lust. For FFFF#10 they will perform as a trio (Nicola Kearey, Ian Carter, and Ellie Wilson): vocals, guitar, and fiddle. Kapela Maliszów (PL) https://unzippedfly.bandcamp.com/album/wiejski-d-ez When Songlines recently published their list “The 50 Greatest World Music Albums of the Last Five Years” the Polish trio Kapela Maliszów featured prominently with their latest album, ‘Wiejski Dżez’, literally meaning ‘Village Jazz’. Village jazz is indeed a perfect description for the music which breathes new life into age old folk music traditions from rural parts of Southern Poland with fiery and jazzy improvisations. Jan Malisz is a man who keeps traditions from the villages alive, not just by playing music, but also leading workshops and building his own instruments like violins, hurdy-gurdys, nyckelharpas and more. With Kapela Maliszów he gets help from his two children, Kacper (violin) and Zuzanna (baraban drum, frame drum). Together the family trio delivers a fresh take on Polish folk music which has received high praises internationally. Now they take their village jazz to the village of Sønderho. comaneci (IT) https://comaneci.bandcamp.com/album/rob-a-bank Italian duo Comaneci truly conquered people’s hearts, when they performed on the very first evening of the very first Fanø Free Folk Festival back in 2010. It seems therefore fitting to bring them back for this 10 year anniversary. But just like Fanø Free Folk Festival has developed, so has Comaneci who has now expanded to a trio with Simone Cavina’s drums and percussion added to the mix as can be heard on their excellent recent album ‘Rob a Bank’. But like in 2010 you can expect a charming and moving mix of rootsy songwriting, punk ethos and atmospheric tape loops with Glauco Salvo’s highly inventive guitar playing and Francesca Amati’s excellent voice still in place. Bona Fide (DK) https://soundcloud.com/bona-fide-941923759 Bona Fide is a gothic folk band, consisting of vocalist Sofia Luna and guitarist Emil Palme. The duo released their debut tape in the beginning of 2018, and will be performing their contemporary folk music at the tenth anniversary of Fanø Free Folk Festival in 2019. While Emil Palme has played at the festival before as a part of Yngel and Boujeloud, this will be the first visit from Sofia Luna. As Bona Fide, the two talented musicians cut to the bone of their musical arrangements, achieving a minimalism that speaks to the feelings of the listeners and bring them together. Bona Fide’s mission is to use the potential of folk to tell stories and fairy tales, thus creating a space where the differences of the audience disappears for a while. Groupa (SE) https://soundcloud.com/groupa Swedish band Groupa are true mavericks who have explored strange corners of Nordic folk music since 1980. Originally a quartet, Groupa is now a trio consisting of Mats Edén, Terje Isungset and Jonas Simonson. Using instruments such as flutes, viola d'amore and various percussion, the trio creates a deeply moving and often meditative take on Nordic folk music. ‘Silent Folk’ one of their albums was named, a fitting name for the mystic moods conjured by the brilliant musicians. On their brand new album, Groupa turns to Norwegian folk traditions. And as one can expect, once again they manage to create a highly personal vision using the roots of Norwegian folk culture. Groupa has played in Denmark several times, but this will be their first performance on Fanø Free Folk Festival. The concert is supported by puls. Gate (NZ) https://gatemm.bandcamp.com/ Best known for his work as a part of the New Zealand based experimental rock band The Dead C, Michael Morley’s solo project Gate continues a tradition of musical exploring and story-telling. As Gate, Morley experiments with different musical genres, creating an auditive experience that entrances the audience and challenges the way we think about music and sound. Gate’s latest album, “Freedom Ghosts” was released in 2017. From his time with The Dead C Morley has experience as vocalist and electric guitarist, and with this solo project he uses his versatile musical talent to create subtle but impressive songs that stick with you for a long time. Gate has previously visited Denmark during the Festival of Endless Gratitude in Copenhagen in 2016, and this year Morley will revisit when he plays at Fanø Free Folk Festival 2019. Own Road Band (DK) https://ownroad.bandcamp.com/ Own Road is usually Copenhagen-based Simon Skjødt Jensen’s one-man band, but this year the project will expand to a six member special edition version! Own Road’s music exists in a twilight space between American folk music, singer-songwriter, and psychedelica. With a beautiful voice, guitars, percussion as well as more exotic instruments, Simon’s compositions move effortlessly between anxiety, melodic beauty, and otherworldly abandon. Own Road’s eponymous debut was released in 2010 to great critical acclaim with numerous EP’s and different projects to follow - amongst them a split album with FFFF-alumni Mute Swimmer. In late 2018 Simon was invited to play at a private party in Viborg where old friends and earlier collaborators from Simon’s ex-band The Fields joined him on stage. The rich sound and new perspectives of Simon’s body of work made sense for the full band to explore further, and seeing as Own Road was part of Fanø Free Folk Festival’s very first line-up, it made perfect sense to welcome Simon back for our anniversary with his evolved special edition Own Road Band featuring Thomas Richard Christensen, Svend Ghani Nordby, Jody Ghani Nordby, Ellen Holck, and Thomas Ahlmark. Dagny i Forsen (SE) https://www.facebook.com/LysetIForsen/ Back in 2015 the Swedish trio Lyset i forsen visited Fanø Free Folk Festival with a stunning concert in Sønderho Church. In the meantime the trio has expanded, as they teamed up with another trio, Dagny. The result, of course, is Dagny i Forsen. A new sextet (or “double trio”) which has already impressed us with their first album. The album was hailed by Swedish roots magazine Lira as one of the finest folk releases of 2018, and we tend to agree. With instruments like violin, viola, viola d’amore, saxophone and clarinet mixed with occasional vocal harmonies, Dagny i Forsen creates playful and beautiful improvisations and delivers a timeless take on the rich Nordic folk music traditions. The concert is supported by puls. Praed (LB) https://akuphone.bandcamp.com/album/doomsday-survival-kit Psychedelic shaabi in Sønderho! That’s a sentence you don’t hear everyday. But Lebanese duo Praed are ready to create quite a party, when they bring the vivid arab dance music to Fanø with a mix of psychedelic electronic sounds, jazzy improvisations and delirious clarinets. Much like the traditional Sønderhoning dance of Fanø seems to induce a trance like state, so the music of Praed aims to send the audience into a hypnotic state - or with their own words: put the listener in a state of sonic delirium. Praed has performed at several festivals around the world, and in 2018 they expanded their line-up with a new big band version including people such as Nadah el Shazly, Maurice Louca, Alan Bishop, Radwan Moumneh and more. They have recently released the acclaimed album ‘Doomsday Survival Kit’. So grab a kaffepunch and strap in for a wild dance ritual!
