DICE Conference + Festival 2019

  • The second edition of DICE Conference + Festival will take place between October 31st and November 2nd, 2019. This year’s live programme will include experimental live performances and sound installations at the TABORKIRCHE, as well as live concerts and club nights at BI NUU. The title of this year’s edition is “OVERTIME” The opening night Artist Spotlight will be given by the multidisciplinary performance artist, DJ, and author JULIANA HUXTABLE. In her talk she will trace her artistic development, elaborating on how her experience as an activist and club promoter has lead to her bold, cross-disciplinary artistic output. Parisian producer, writer and mixed media artist CRYSTALLMESS will present COLLECTIVE AMNESIA: IN MEMORY OF LOGOBI at the Taborkirche. A pluridisciplinary project, combining djing, video and 3D, “Collective Amnesia” describes the active process of collectively forgetting, decontextualizing, minimizing, and burying facts. “In Memory Of Logobi” explores the intersection between post-colonial alienation, technology and DIY culture as well as a postmodern approach to ethnomusicology. Following her live performance, Crystallmess will finish the evening with an encore dj set. Also at the Taborkirche, Turkish electroacoustic composer IPEK GORGUN will present an experimental soundscape, drawing from musique concrète, noise and field recordings. The classically trained sound artist infuses her works with microscopic details before zooming out to reveal a winding, cinematic narrative. As part of the live concert programme at Bi Nuu, we are happy to welcome electronic avant garde singer, composer and producer NADAH EL SHAZLY with her full band. The Cairo-based artist expertly blends traditional Egyptian sounds, acoustic instruments, and electronic beats to create a one-of-a-kind sonic tapestry. She will be joined by Baltimore-based sitarist and producer AMI DANG, whose sound takes cues from ancient Indian classical music, Punjabi and Bollywood popular music, with retro electronic expressions. Further additions to Bi Nuu’s live performance lineup include Queens-bred raunchy hip-hop fashionista DAI BURGER, Jersey-based hardcore rapper RAHRAH GABOR, UK club staple SHYGIRL, experimental noise maker ALE HOP, J-pop mutator GOLIN, eclectic and soulful vocalist, the experimental organist RAHEL HUTTER, and the Gothenburg-based pop princess TAMI T, who combines trance, noise and gleeful pop to create unforgettable floorfillers. Joining us for our club nights we have “the First Lady of Beatdown” LADY BLACKTRONIKA, a Berlin based dj from California whose special brand of house has made her an essential influence in club culture. We will also welcome Dutch bass veteran DJ MARCELLE, NAAFi-affiliated dj TAYHANA, multi-disciplinary artist and producer BLACK CRACKER, dj STELLA ZEKRI, genre-hopping artist and dj The Neighbourhood Character and Q-BRA, a pioneering LGBTQIA+ dj from Istanbul. The 2019 programme addresses the valuation of time and work in relation to music, art and society, and examines the manifold meanings of OVERTIME in an ever-changing global context. What is “overtime”? What role does it play in our lives? Who benefits? The interdisciplinary festival programme features genre-defying international artists selected for their bold and innovative performance strategies and formats. Our conference addresses methods for artistic and personal self-preservation and advancement, community-building, institutional hacking, and grassroots organising, with music as a driving force for social justice and artistic innovation. ABOUT DICE DICE’s programme showcases creative practitioners whose contributions to the artistic field are underrepresented as a result of structural discrimination. Female, trans and non-binary artists are creatively and practically undernourished by the music industry and by systems of institutional support. DICE aims to provide the reinforcement necessary for artistic freedom and development. Through our extensive partner and speaker network, we connect artists with pro-active audiences, activists, and academics, as well as structural resources that will help them build sustainable creative and professional lives. DICE is possible with the kind support of Musicboard Berlin, Musikfonds, and Initiative Musik. DICE CONFERENCE + FESTIVAL would like to make sure that everyone is served and connected, and aims to provide a support structure from which all can benefit. For lower income participants, there are options to apply for sponsored tickets (dice.berlin/sponsored) or to volunteer (dice.berlin/volunteer).
