MOVIE: 24 Hour Party People (Michael Winterbottom)
A movie about Tony Wilson, the driving force behind Joy Division, Happy Mondays and the Manchester dance club Hacienda. Michael Winterbottom portrays the rise and fall of the 'Madchester' music scene, with an ironic, commentary role for Steve Coogan.
It was a historic event: June 4, 1976, Lesser Free Trade Hall, Manchester. The Sex Pistols came to play. In the room with folding seats nailed to the floor, 42 people were present - each of them sooner or later started to do something in pop music.
Among those present is TV presenter Tony Wilson. The former Cambridge student is inspired by the concert and starts the record label Factory Records. Wilson contracts Joy Division (later New Order) and Happy Mondays; in the early eighties he founded the Hacienda dance club in an old factory. Soon the disco became the center of British rave culture. Ten years later, the club is destroyed by drugs, violence and financial mismanagement. The record label Factory Records is the same fate.
