A dedicated force in the midwest music industry. With 20 years as a professional DJ, and 14 years coordinating electronic music events, promoting, talent buying, running an artist collective and mentoring future promoters via her company Apart. Fortune is widely recognized as a respected key player through out the region, and beyond.
Growing up in England, her family hosted epic parties with live musicians, dancing and 200 or so happy people. Playing piano, flute and saxophone, early years were also influenced by local Bristol artists like Massive Attack, Roni Size. Rave culture erupted, Steve Silk Hurley's Jack Your Body was a top 40 #1, The Prodigy and Carl Cox became household names, and she was hooked. By 16 she was involved with rave promoters Transition.
1993 barely 19, Fortune headed to California with $140 and a suitcase. No dance music culture, Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" bumped out of cars and clubs, East battled West, and she pursued her hip-hop education. Returning home a year later a new genre was sweeping the nation - jungle. Every weekend was spent absorbing DJs blowing up the clubs: Grooverider, Sasha, LTJ Bukem.
Six months on she arrived in Milwaukee. A fixture in the emerging club scene, she took up djing, quickly landing two underground hip-hop residencies. Developing her style to include house, techno and broken beats, Fortune played noted establishments across the States, including San Francisco's infamous The EndUp; Minneapolis's First Ave; Chicago's SpyBar, Primary, The Mid and is a regular name at the legendary Smart Bar. She’s played the Canary Islands (Spain) and in 2018 played the city that influenced her so much, Bristol. Festival appearances include: Spring Awakening, Summerfest, Wavefront, Winter Warmer and Even Furthur.
A testament to her range, she's booked as direct support for a diverse array of top tier artists, notably Audiojack, Claude VonStroke, Colette, Cassy, Catz & Dogz, Danny Daze, Derrick Carter, Derrick May, Gaiser, Green Velvet, Honey Dijon, J.Phlip, Kate Simko, Justin Martin, Kaskade, Kenny Glasgow, Kid Sister, KiNK, Kool Keith.
In ’09 Milwaukee music collapsed. Determined to keep house and techno present, Fortune shifted focus to her promotions company. Rebranded as Apart in 2011, she’s produced non-stop events ever since, the only area woman to make independent electronic music promotions a full time profession. Discontent with skewed industry dynamics, she founded the respected Apart Artists, implemented the Apart internship program, and hosts panels/workshops, to foster inclusivity, health and positive growth.
Fortune’s mission: Facilitate well being through music, whether as a dj, promoter or mentor.
