A composer whose extensive work has touched on such genres as krautrock, ambient, new age, minimalism, psychedelic rock and experimental, Manuel Göttsching’s esoteric style has influenced dozens of music makers around the world.
Perhaps the genre that bears his stamp most prominently is electronic, thanks to his groundbreaking E2-E4, which could credibly claim to be the first electronic dance music album, presaging minimal techno back in 1981.
For this special show at the Barbican, Göttsching will perform his much loved 1976 record New Age Of Earth for the first time ever in its entirety, a solo work where he played keyboards, synthesizers and drum machines in addition to guitar. Ranked in several ‘best of’ lists including Pitchfork’s 50 Best Ambient Albums of All Time, and described by Vinyl Factory as ‘a (mostly) gentle masterpiece’, New Age Of Earth was the first to be released under Göttsching’s ensemble Ashra.
