  • MrBlaq and Jacob Hoffman this month! Mr BlaQ - Overland Recordings, SYSTEM, Intellephunk - has been lurking in the underpinnings of the Minneapolis dance music scene since around 1999 or 2000. Who cares... As a total noob at the time, he missed all chances to revel in the “real” rave scene of the 90s. His first exposure to dance music was lame post-808 Trance pushed on him by his stupid, dumb roommate Phil. mrBlaQ immediately bought really crappy Numark turntables and learned how to mimic DJs. This lead to him playing many gigs for Sound-In-Motion at the now defunct Quest and Tabu night clubs. Over a period of time, he did relax his musical sphincter and transitioned to playing more mellow, yet still decisively shitty Progressive House. While visiting Vital Vinyl some time in 2003, he offered to help fix their internet router. Having accomplished this task, he was offered employment and did successfully carry out his tasks as “Lead Nerd” slash ”Basement Dave” until late 2010. During that time, mrBlaQ graduated from DJing Trance and began playing Breaks and Electro. Through the teachings of Vital coworkers and master table technicians, James Patrick, Ryan Simatic, and Jens ‘500 Internal’ Thorsgard, mrBlaQ learned of the word and sound of our great spiritual Techno advisors Mills and Richie. This lead to his playing many Microhouse and Minimal Techno shows at the Dinkytowner, the holiest of holy brunch basements. Most notably, opening for Sean ‘Someone Else’ O’Neil. Also during his time at Vital, he acquired a good portion of vinyl tailings left by the great DJ Mark Lancaster who was last seen riding west into the sunset. These records, which can be most exactly described as “IDM” or “Experimental” or “Is this 33rpm?” helped mrBlaQ realize there was such a thing as “thoughtful electronic music.” Around this time, mrBlaQ transitioned into the Drum and Bass period of his life. He helped host the continuation of DC Production’s ‘9th Circle’ with Mike MBC, where he displayed an appreciation for anything related to Jungle, DnB, or Breakcore. After this, mrBlaQ fell off the performance radar for a while as Minneapolis itself was slowly transitioning. Raves had fallen off and clubs weren’t yet receptive to good dance music. Still practicing his craft at home, he focused mainly on UK Dubstep, not to be confused with Brostep, and gelled a bit with the off-kilter glitch vibe. mrBlaQ occasionally brought this mood out to various restaurant lounges such as King and I Thai or Mode at Honey. By 2015, still late to the game as always, mrBlaQ attended his first Movement festival in Detroit. Coming home with a newfound appreciation for the craft, he focused his efforts on mixing Techno and all that which fell near 130 BPM. Having been graced with opportunities to play under Intelliphunk’s Communion showcase, he’s since opened for the best Techno artist ever, Sebastian Mullaert. His continuing work in and around the Techno movement has landed him gigs with Mike Gervais' SYSTEM and Drop Bass Network's Even Furthur mrBlaQ continues at this time to bridge the gaps between genres and moods, attempting to fuse movement on the dancefloor while simultaneously engaging the mind in eager anticipation of what will happen next. https://www.residentadvisor.net/dj/mrblaq Jacob Hoffman - MPLS https://soundcloud.com/jacobhoffman Maximium - Techno Tuesday Host Dj Mixes: www.soundcloud.com/jayfreitag Original Production: https://soundcloud.com/maximium Flyer Artwork: Jay Freitag Lighting & Visuals: Endif Sponsored By: Simply Vapour Techno Tuesday at Amsterdam Bar & Hall is inspired by a recent layover in Amsterdam. Last year we were traveling abroad and got stuck with an 11 hour layover on a Tuesday night in Amsterdam. After deciding to leave the terminal and visit a coffee shop or two, we found ourselves at a venue called Melkwig for a weekly after hours techno event called Techno Tuesday. The lights were low, the music was loud, and there were spectacular visual effects. Melkwig brings some of the finest artists and musicians from around the world. Although we are not going to be booking artists from across the world, but we will be bringing you the best of the Twin Cities and surrounding areas Techno DJ’s and we are bringing them to you at a cool venue (hence the name)! We have curated a small team of talented individuals to assist with creating not only spectacular quality sound, but also stunning visuals to compliment the music and amplify the experience. We hope to see you on the dance floor! Please follow our new page Zero One Events for other upcoming shows in the Twin Cities area! 10pm $5 18+
