Friday September 10th, marks the return of multimedia art and curatorial project Funneled Smoke, in collaboration with Voluminous Arts for an 11 hour indoor/outdoor evening of live audio, immersive installations, and performance art at H0l0.
The event brings together an intergenerational lineup of artists from New York’s underground to celebrate the release of Black Meteoric Star’s 5th LP “NYC Beat Boxx”. The album, to be released on September 8th by Voluminous Arts, reflects through a non-linear temporality on New York's rhythmic lineages.
The evening will begin promptly at 5pm in the outdoor space with field recordings from the Funneled Smoke archive followed by an industrial ambient set by Syrvo.
Crystal Peñalosa will present rich ambient work that intertwines methods drawn from the healing arts with an in-depth and detail oriented approach to the impact of sound generated through analog synthesis on the body.
Cult hero of the 1980’s downtown New York scene, Music From Memory recording artist Vito Ricci on synthesizers and prepared guitar, in collaboration with French-Canadian Vocalist Lise Vachon.
Avian, WT, and L.I.E.S records alumni Shawn O' Sullivan will be plunging into lower BPM territory in his first appearance since the global crisis, bringing forth pulsating rhythms with his masterful touch.
At 10pm we will move indoors to reflect on fatigue, speculative rest, and absence in a piece entitled “LONG SUMMER, SHORT CENTURY”, by Barcelona based artist Camila Cañeque, with sound by Nick Podgurski.
An A/V set by the noise artists Sync Sapro and PR VUALA, with live projections by Mauri M.
Funneled Smoke’s in-house video artist Night Shift Nurse will be in the booth controlling an installation consisting of a rear projection screen and lasers, combining digital and analog signal processing in a gritty cyberpunk aesthetic.
Interdisciplinary artist James K’s sound collage approach to audio production and live performance spans genres seamlessly and will be in full effect in the main hall.
Abstract experimentation with electronics and vocals by legendary feminist performance artist Narcissister, in collaboration with Funneled Smoke founder Serpent In A Straight Line.
Gathering inspiration from gospel, New Jersey club sounds, and a spectrum of other sources; Syanide creates vast and intricate temporal landscapes of sonic material that push and pull the body and psyche towards profound inner awakenings.
To close out the night, Voluminous Arts founder and the artist behind Black Meteoric Star Gavilán Rayna Russom will provide a sprawling and charged deck session blending punk and psychedelic sounds with minimalist electronic rhythms.
During the early portion of the night, Voluminous Arts invites you to visit our booth in H0l0's bar area where we'll have vinyl, cassettes, and shirts for sale, as well as info about our releases and the label in general.
Those of us who live here in New York have had to come to grips with the fact that, although the rollout of vaccines has been a profound step in our collective healing, we are still in the middle; rather than at the end, of the Covid-19 global pandemic. Cases in New York are increasing and additionally, in many parts of the world, access to vaccines is severely limited or non-existent and Covid continues to spread. As such we are asking attendees to this event to join us in several actions of community care: We are asking folks to provide proof of vaccination or a negative covid test at the door. Please be aware of your surroundings, ask before reaching out to hug or shake hands and consider wearing a mask, both for the way it helps to limit the spread of the virus as well as for the way it is a gesture of solidarity and an affirmation of a desire to care for those around you. As the organizers of this event we are also taking steps to provide an environment that is as safe as possible for us to enjoy each other's company and the works of art and sound that will be presented.
