  • After a very successful "test" edition in 2009, the Brussels Electronic Music Festival has now become a project whose development is planned to take place over several years. For both Darko, who first came up with the idea for the festival, and for the Centre for Fine Arts, the aim is to give Brussels a festival of electronic music that will both be state-of-the-art and bring people together, along the lines of Mutek in Canada, Sonar in Barcelona, or the Wire festival in Tokyo. Its "Belgian" identity is an essential part of the project, as it aims to showcase the local scene while also restoring the reputation of Brussels on the international music-lovers' map – the vanguard aura the city once enjoyed having gradually faded since the 1980s and the new-wave boom. The idea is to give priority to electronic music for listening to, in an ideal setting, with the audience seated where appropriate, without closing the door to more festive approaches. There will be a strong aesthetic emphasis, but there is no question of being restrictive – legends of experimental music and the most popular DJs are equally welcome; it is hoped, of course, that interaction will take place between their various audiences, which are sure to be quite different. The BEMF programme focuses on four main musical trends: electronica, Krautrock, minimal techno, and experimental music. It takes into account the architectural environment, the comfort, and, above all, the acoustic facilities offered by the Centre for Fine Arts. The festival is being held in the Centre's five auditoria, but also – and this is a first – in Recyclart (artistic laboratory and working space in the centre of Brussels). A first step of the ambitious BEMF towards expanding to more venues in Brussels.
