• WELCOME TO HYBRID LIFE Dedicated to supporting the unsung and the underground through a series of showcase raves, videos, photography, articles and much more. We aim to explore the hybrid life of dance music, to uncover the untold stories, and celebrate those pushing our culture forward into the next decade and beyond. For our launch showcase we’ll be taking over a raw underground warehouse space in the heart of Shoreditch. Joy Orbison, Kyle Hall and Donnacha Costello, three of the most innovative and interesting artists of 2010 so far, will make their London warehouse party debuts alongside our resident Alex Jones. Whether its house, dubstep, techno, disco, or garage, Hybrid Life showcases won’t discriminate in celebrating artists whose experiments in sound are taking underground dance music to inspiring places. JOY ORBISON From mainstream media like the BBC, The Guardian and the NME to underground bibles like Resident Advisor, Fact and XLR8R, they’ve all been digging in their box of superlatives to sing the praises of a 22 year old lad from South London. Without a doubt Joy Orbison is one of the most exciting talents anywhere in dance music today. His debut track Hyph Mngo lit a fire in the dance world, with both RA and Fact naming it their No.1 tune of 2009. His genre defying style, essentially dubstep, encapsulates the full gamut of his personal influences from acid house to 2-step. It’s the steady hand with which he moulds his warm melodies, drums, bass and vocal filaments that set him apart, and give his sound such an essential aesthetic. KYLE HALL At a time when the Detroit scene is undergoing something of a renaissance, to be universally touted as the Motor City’s brightest young star is some accolade, yet Kyle Hall wears that cap naturally, with his own distinct style. From his early music on Omar S’s FXHE imprint to his outstanding recent remix of Darkstar’s emotional Hyperdub anthem ‘Aidy’s Girl is a Computer’, in less than three years, Kyle Hall has grown and shown a diversity of skill, sound and understanding that is simply frightening by anyone’s standards, far less a teenager. With future releases on Warp, Hyperdub and Carl Craig’s Planet E there’s much to look forward to from this prodigious talent. WILL SAUL The deep futuristic sound that Simple Records have championed over the last few years had already shown Will Saul to be a musically courageous man with admirable taste. However his more recent Aus imprint illustrates someone who clearly revels in the hybrid sounds of modern dance music, with releases ranging from MyMy’s Lee Jones to Joy Orbison. As an artist in his own right he has consistently impressed, even when remixing the dubstep-techno fusion ‘Justify’ by Ramadanman and Appleblim. For this Hybrid Life showcase his set will bridge that of Donnacha Costello and Joy Orbison, providing him with the chance to display his deep Detroit like sound, full of soul and devastating melodies. DONNACHA COSTELLO The distinctive warm melodic and deep feeling techno sound of Donnacha Costello is a welcome presence at this showcase. Performing a brand new live set built around his wonderful new album on Pokerflat, Donnacha’s emotional yet punchy sound will find a willing home in our raw bunker-like surroundings. Influenced early on by the likes of Kraftwerk, Orbital and Detroit pioneers like Inner City, today Donnacha is inspired by the overlap of techno and dubstep. This sets us up nicely on the night when his live performance will be followed by Will Saul and then Joy Orbison’s highly anticipated set. ALEX JONES When you consider the myriad of styles, influences and range of output from Alex Jones, it’s easy to see why he is the Hybrid Life resident DJ. His distinctly trippy take on house and techno has filtered its way into our hearts via everything from his stunning remix of Peaches with Matt Walsh last year, to ‘True Friends’ his big hit on Kindisch with Glimpse. His early love for 2-step and drum’n’bass still permeates his sound today, and underlines why his label Hypercolour has had such a prolifically diverse and essential output. With forthcoming releases on Get Physical and Tsuba, and the launch of a hot new label called Glass Table, which features Kyle Hall remixing Jimmy Edgar (immense!), Alex Jones’ hybrid sensibilities are an inspiration for us all. --------------------- CHILL OUT ROOM The lost art of the chill out room in modern day clubbing makes a welcome return at this Hybrid Life launch showcase. Steering the laid back vibes will be the Love Fever boys who have been making a splash with their wonderful word of mouth parties over the last 18 months, most recently slamming out their brand of deep house and disco to their loyal party-goers in an old converted Victorian Bathhouse! For this special chill out session, joined by Ste Roberts and Stevie T, they will leave their customary deep house at the door and dig deep for a night of aural erotica, dubbed out disco & string-laiden sensuality in our chill out room. Expect everything from Vangelis to Serge Gainsbourg via Moodymann and Prince. FOR THE UNSUNG AND THE UNDERGROUND
