Sub_Bar returns to Leipzig: We are back with our pioneering event series around
subfrequencies and haptic art
Our sense of touch is usually ignored by compositional practices. Yet, it is home to our deepest memories and most instinctive reactions, talking a language of pain and pleasure, traumas and comfort. So, what happens when we stimulate it with music?
At Sub_Bar, we invited world-renowned deaf and hearing artists to compose sub_works, original compositions using only subfrequencies (frequencies between 30hz and 150hz), to shift the music paradigm from being a stimuli for our auditory sense to our haptic sense. Their works will be played through a powerful subwoofer system, transforming the event location into a musical pressure room, for a unique experience that activates the whole body.
After successful events in Berlin, Cologne, Lisbon and Porto we are coming back to Leipzig in November. On Thursday 24th and Friday 25th of November, we will host a 2-days music production workshop at Leipzig University Library, discovering music for subfrequencies by using haptic devices and Ableton Live. The workshop is led by Franziska Kastner aka Bocu, one of the Sub_Bar artists. On Saturday 26th of November, we will take over ZiMMT e.V, to showcase compositions for subfrequencies from artists such as Byetone (Raster Noton), Dj Troi Lee, (Deaf Rave), Ümit Han (Traum Records), Alexander Tillegreen (Raster Media), Akka Miau (Female:Pressure), Alejandro Mosso (Sushitech), Julia Lema (ESA-Aix) and many more. On Sunday 27th of November we will close our event with five live concerts from Ana Bogner, Atelier Francesco, Peter Kirn, Stefanie Egedy and Tinkah. The events at ZiMMT are for members of the association. A temporary membership can be concluded uncomplicated and free of charge directly on site.
Sub_Bar is a vision dedicated to sub-frequencies, a space that invites everyone to meet, interact and experience music in an innovative, inclusive, and immersive way. The lack of expression and meaning that sound usually provides (harmony, lyrics, space) is perfectly compensated by what makes Sub_Bar unique: its experience. The intense physicality of it, the switch in focus from hearing to feeling, the depth of our guest’s attention and the ephemerality of a moment: at Sub_Bar you become part of a collective experience.
