Phil Kieran’s New Electronic Night LEATHERETTE Set
For Afterparty of Defying Gravity: A Punk Odyssey
Following a hugely successful early run at the Ulster Sports Club, Phil Kieran brings his
essential new club night Leatherette to the Banana Block in Belfast on Thursday, 16th
March.
Described as “a trip into the darker side of early electronic music,” the Belfast producer
and DJ’s set doubles up as the official afterparty of the inaugural outing of punk-inspired
fashion competition Defying Gravity: A Punk Odyssey. Taking over the Banana Block,
a thriving events space and living museum in East Belfast, it’s a unique celebration of
homegrown talent and a fashion competition honouring a true punk and style icon,
Jordan Mooney.
As well as delivering the soundtrack to the main event - which will give a diverse range
of local fashion designers a chance to showcase their work and walk away with
immersive work experience with a major TV network and a £1000 cash prize - Kieran’s
Leatherette set will take club-goers on a trip through the music that influenced the future
of dance music.
Kieran said: “The more I talked to people, the more I kept hearing the same bands and
DJs being name-checked as early influences; acts that I love and listen to myself. It’ll
be very much a dance music night but leaning more towards the music that shaped
what later became acid house or techno, the music that still to this day influences what
we listen and dance to”
“It’s essentially an 80s night with a twist, mixed with some contemporary electronic
dance music featuring the likes of DAF, New Order, Throbbing Gristle, Can, Autechre,
Andrew Weatherall and Roman Flugel,” he added.
Kieran’s no stranger to the scene himself having formed the EBM band Alloy Mental in
the early 2000s and working with Douglas J McCarthy on their ‘Fall Rise EP’ and Nitzer
Ebb’s track ‘Murderous’ which is bound to be on the Leatherette playlist.
Tickets for the Leatherette at the Defying Gravity afterparty are priced at £10.
