Planetarium: Iasos, Josh Dunn and Justin Carter

  • Planetarium is an event where people come to listen deeply. We ask everyone who attends to remain silent in the listening area and to keep all conversations to a whisper in other parts of the space. We also ask that there is no phone use in the entire space. If that sounds good to you, read on... - - - - - - - - Planetarium lands in the private loft in Ridgewood for its April edition. There's a beautiful hi-fi system in the space, and there are plentiful vibes. Bring blankets, sleeping bags, pillows or anything else you'd like to make yourself comfortable. We only do a handful of reservations so that there's plenty of room to spread out. For this edition we'll welcome Iasos to the aural skyscape. If you're not familiar with Iasos, we'll let a snippet from a Noisey article (which we've linked to in full below) tell it: "In 1989, a scientist at Plymouth State College in New Hampshire discovered that Iasos’ music—in particular a piece called “The Angels of Comfort”—bore a remarkable resemblance to the divine strains heard by people as they [had a near-death experience]. Yet that information would not surprise Iasos one bit, because the 66-year-old believes he is an earthly conduit for the musical expressions of a being named Vista, who transmits ideas to Iasos telepathically, which he then turns into song. Iasos, who was born in Greece but raised in California from the age of four, has enjoyed these visitations for some 40 years..." Iasos is not just a pioneer of new age music. He is the one for which the term was initially coined. The story goes that Alan Watts, upon hearing Iasos performing his inimitable music on the street in Sausalito in the early 70s, said, "this is classical music for the new age." That quote ended up on the hype sticker for Iasos's first album, and the rest is history. Iasos will perform for entirety of the last hour of Planetarium, after a heavy dose of ear-delivered mind, body and soul priming from Justin Carter and Josh Dunn. Justin is, of course, the Planetarium mainstay DJ and co-founder. Josh Dunn, one of our dearest friends, was also a resident DJ of Planetarium in 2018, when it happened regularly at Nowadays. Everything he played back then was always way ahead of the curve, heavily affecting the trajectory of Planetarium to this day. No doubt he'll bless us with something we can't even fathom for this edition. As it's been at every Planetarium this year, dinner will be served between 7pm and 8pm by Marisa Mendez Marthaller aka Soup Doula. There will be two soups (one of them vegan) served with hunks of She Wolf Bread. Dinner is included in the price of your ticket. (We don't offer alternatives for dinner, and you are welcome to bring your own if you have specific dietary needs, though your ticket price would remain the same.) Marisa will serve the soups between 7pm and 8pm, when we'll keep the lights up and have a more social hour before we go deep. At 8pm, soup will become self-serve for any late arrivals (or takers on seconds), and we'll turn the lights down and go far out into space. You can bring your own drinks (there's no bar), and we'll have all the creature comforts that you might otherwise need inside, so you never have to leave the bubble we're creating. In order to give more people the opportunity to join us, we limit tickets to two per person. Please do not make multiple orders. We will only honor two tickets purchased under one name, even if you make multiple purchases. Also, because we're doing this at a private space, we'll only send the location info to people who reserve space in advance. We'll send out the location from [email protected] on the morning of the session. Make sure to safe list that email address so you receive the notification. If you have not received this email by noon on Saturday, April 1, but have purchased a ticket, search your spam, junk, promotions and other folders for an email from [email protected]. The subject is always something like: "Please Read: All The Info For Planetarium". So you know how to plan, we can tell you it's not too far from Nowadays, less than five minutes from the Halsey L. We've posted three tiers of tickets. $75 is the standard contribution we need from everyone to make the night work. We're also offering supplemented $30 tickets for those without the means to purchase a full price ticket, and we're offering supporter tickets for those that can afford to supplement the lower priced tickets. The $30 tickets are on an honor system basis. Please only take them if you need them, and please support at the higher level if you are able. We're looking forward to getting lost in sound with you. Until then...
