Straight from Łódź - the industrial (slightly rusted) heart of Poland, to Manchester, the sister city. An evening of experimental music awaits, where FOQL, the mastermind behind the curated event (her latest album released by Jon K and Elle Andrews on MAL recordings), Rafał Ryterski, a queer composer who stands as a central figure in contemporary Polish music, and SSRI, a mysterious duo enamored with plunging into bass and mist, will take the stage.
This unconventional fusion defies genre boundaries, intertwining elements of dark dub, fractured rhythms, unease, and euphoria. Prepare to immerse yourselves in the most currently intriguing and uncompromising sounds from the Polish independent music scene.
Łódź (pronounced woodge) is essentially Poland’s own Manchester. Both cities are third-largest in their respective countries and both were once behemoths of the textile industry, reinventing their declining city centres as modern metropolises of culture in the early 2000s. The home of Poland’s most famous film school (alumni include Andrzej Wajda and Roman Polański), Łódź is also David Lynch’s favourite city, who filmed parts of his 2006 psychological thriller Inland Empire there, falling in love with Łódź’s dilapidated Art Nouveau architecture. There’s also a long history of rave in the city, such as it’s annual Freedom Parade. Starting in 1997 and modelled after Berlin’s Love Parade, it brought Poland’s fans of techno, hardcore and house to Łódź and helped shape the city’s identity as a place of self-expression, now also manifested throughout its often skyscraper-sized street art.
