Helena Hauff The dynamic DJ and producer Helena Hauff has left an indelible mark on the world of dance music with her ability to balance technical intricacy and moments of pure chaos. Born and raised in 1985 in Hamburg, Germany, Hauff’s musical journey has since been shaped by diverse experiences and influences. On Friday, May 26, that journey comes to Control Club with JETLAGGED w/ Helena Hauff. Hauff’s initial love for bands like Nirvana, the Stooges, and British trance-rockers Loop eventually led her to the world of techno. The genre’s primal repetition and industrial harshness instantly captivated Hauff, drawing her into Hamburg’s underground scene. It was at the legendary Golden Pudel, the famed politically engaged and anti-capitalist basement dive, where she honed her skills and developed a deep understanding of the connection between DJ and dancefloor. Her Birds and Other Instruments night at the venue was a go-to spot for the grittier, hard-edged electro techno she has since come to embody. In 2013, Hauff burst onto the production scene with her debut EP, Actio Reactio, released on Actress‘ Werkdiscs label. This groundbreaking release showcased her raw talent and unleashed a fusion of electro, techno, and EBM that was both energetic and delightfully chaotic. The EP served as a launching pad for Hauff’s subsequent rise to prominence over the next decade. Hauff’s discography is a testament to her continuous exploration and boundary-pushing approach. PAN, known for its cutting-edge releases, hosted a standout EPs from Hauff and fellow Golden Pudel DJ F#x titled Prototype. The EP exemplified her ability to create intricate soundscapes that transcended genre boundaries, leaving listeners captivated. Bunker sublabel Panzerkreuz Records, a renowned label specializing in underground and obscure sounds, released Hauff’s mesmerizing EP Return to Disorder, further solidifying her reputation as a trailblazer. In fact, Return to Disorder would later become the name of Hauff’s own label, launched in 2015. Handmade Birds, a cassette-only imprint, also showcased her talents with the hauntingly beautiful A Tape, while Ninja Tune released Lex Tertia. More recently, Hauff has contributed to fabric (Living With Ladybirds, 2022), the esteemed London club, as well as being part of Tresor’s Kern series and collaborating with Exaltics on the Futuros EP released in 2021. Ninja Tune, a pioneering electronic music label, released Hauff’s second album,Qualm, following her debut, Discreet Desires on Handmade Tapes in 2015. Qualm demonstrated her artistic growth and solidified her position as a producer to be reckoned with utilizing an analog-only, single-take approach. The album also showcased her ability to craft complex compositions filled with raw energy and unwavering drive. Tracks like No Qualms and Hyper-Intelligent Genetically Enriched Cyborg resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike, establishing Hauff as a true innovator in her field. Collaborations have also played a significant role in Hauff’s career. Her partnership with Andreas Gehm resulted in the exceptional release Helena Hauff Meets Andreas Gehm on Solar One Music. This collaborative effort seamlessly merged their distinct creative visions, resulting in a unique sonic experience. Hauff’s collaboration with Morah also produced the highly regarded track Hauff & Morah – Segment 3, further showcasing her versatility and collaborative prowess. Hauff’s impact extends beyond her releases. Her inclusion in Radio 1’s Essential Mix was met with widespread acclaim, displaying her versatility and skill in curating diverse tracks. She has also graced respected electronic music platforms with her mixes, including Resident Advisor, HÖR, Bassiani, Dazed, and Boiler Room. Renowned for her captivating live performances, Hauff has garnered a devoted global following. From intimate club nights to prestigious festivals like Dekmantel (including an iconic 2018 festival closing set), Lente Kabinet, Dimensions, and Sónar, she consistently delivers sets that leave a lasting impression on audiences. Hauff’s success aligns with a broader shift in the electronic music industry, as more women break barriers and make their mark. Alongside artists like Lena Willikens, Amelie Lens, and Nina Kraviz, Hauff has become a leading figure in championing diversity and gender equality within the scene. While she may not be as active on social media as some of her peers, her influence as a visible and influential female artist is immeasurable. Despite her rise to prominence, Hauff remains grounded and passionate about her craft. She cherishes the intimate, sweat-soaked parties that ignited her passion and strives to recreate that atmosphere regardless of the venue or audience size. With each new release, performance, and collaboration, Helena Hauff continues to solidify her status as a visionary and trailblazer in electronic music.
