One of the most legendary of all NYC dance music royalty, Louie Vega’s thousands of credits solo and as half of Masters at Work tell only part of his history. Born into a musical family in the Bronx, by the 80s he was DJing at legendary NYC clubs forging the beginnings of house music. The massive success of MAW from their 1989 debut literally wrote much of the song book for NYC dance floors, leading to acclaimed work as Nuyorican Soul and KenLou that blew up the envelope of what was possible in the genre by incorporating elements of jazz, disco, hip hop, soul, Latin and African grooves, and more, influences that continue to shape Vega’s music.
His decades of experience are writ large in every set and release, as proven by his nominations for Grammy awards and unbroken string of residencies at prestigious New York clubs and events. Currently on massive demand following his 2022 album, which included dance floor smash ‘How He Works’, and with a residency at acclaimed Knockdown Center, in 2023 Louis Vega remains stronger than ever and a Master at work.
Joining Louis Vega for his long-awaited return to the Bay Area are Detroit’s Sillygirlcarmen and Oakland’s Coflo. A quickly rising figure from Motown with tracks to prove it, Sillygirlcarmen makes her San Francisco debut having earned the respect of Detroit’s OGs, dropping a pair of tracks on New York’s legendary Nervous Records and sharing credits with Reggie Dokes on her recent ‘Over’. Head of Catch the Ghost Records and member of the Soulshifters crew, Coflo’s wide-angle take on house, as heard in his many releases, provides a perfect match for Vega’s innovations. For Respekt Music’s Public Works debut and the return of a true legend to SF, we can think of few stronger alliances.
