This year, Pluto re-entered Aquarius for the first time in 235 years. The last time said (dwarf) planet passed through that same constellation was from 1777 to 1788—a 21-year period that saw the founding of the United States, the Haitian revolution, and the deposition of the last King of France and his wife, Marie-Antoinette. Often falsely attributed the quote of Qu'ils mangent de la brioche, the extravagant Queen consort was accused of a frivolous disregard for her starving subjects suffering from bread shortages, for which she would eventually pay with her head. Creamcake’s ninth 3hd holds this demonized public image to account with “Let Them Eat Cake,” an interdisciplinary festival, running from October 27 to November 4, and examining the current era of exploitation and opulence at the edge of insurrection.
Four main events and several satellite programs will take place across four Berlin venues to present the work of twenty-plus multi-hyphenate artists, performers, producers, musicians, writers, and curators, navigating away from material over-indulgence toward emancipation and transformation. Through performances, concerts, readings, DJ sets, and an epic two-day banquet, 3hd 2023: “Let Them Eat Cake” looks back to the symbols and archetypes of the past, to unpack the problems of the present and its complex connections between labor and consumption, growth and entropy, progress and decline. In a time of extreme wealth and severe poverty, unequal distribution of resources and economic inequality, there’s hope in Pluto—the celestial body of destruction, death, and rebirth—as it leaves the constellation of materialist Capricorn for humanitarian Aquarius, bringing much needed change in its wake.
