Join us Saturday October 28th as we welcome Detroit heavyweight Jon Dixon, alongside Toronto Hustle and Ali Black at BLKSPACE Studios. We are thrilled to have Jon for his very first time in Toronto!! Not only will Jon be DJing, he will also be playing live keys throughout the night into the early morning hours! Jon has been extremely busy the last year touring with Carl Craig, and we are so lucky to have him for this very special first time Toronto show! Get ready for a proper Detroit x Toronto night of quality house and techno!
Jon Dixon Bio:
Ever since he could remember, Jon Dixon has had a passion for music. Jon began playing by ear at the age of four and has always enjoyed challenging himself by learning music in this manner. He began reading and studying classical piano at age 15 while enrolled at The High School For Fine and Performing Arts, where he also studied Jazz with Mr. Edward Quick. Upon graduating he began performing with the Detroit Symphony Civic Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Detroit's own Godfather of jazz, the late Marcus Belgrave. While performing locally with this ensemble, he also attended Wayne State University where he studied jazz piano under Matt Michaels and holds a BA of Arts in Music and recently acquired a Bachelors in Music Therapy in 2023. As time went on, word of mouth began to spread about Dixon and his talents. While in college he accompanied The Mosaic Youth Theater of Detroit as an accompanist/bandleader for their productions and concerts as well as performed all over the city and state. Jon currently teaches multiple group piano classes at the Michigan State University Community Music School in Midtown Detroit. He has had the chance to also play for/with Chick Corea, Jeff Hamilton, Robert Hurst, Terence Blanchard, Kurt Elling, Delfayo Marsalis, John Clayton, The Count Basie Orchestra, Marcus Belgrave, The Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Leon Ware, N'Dambi, Jessica Care Moore, Malcolm Jamal Warner, Algebra Blessett, Mayaeni, Eric Roberson, Dwele, Goldie, Amp Fiddler and more over the past 15 years. Recently Dixon has been taking another approach towards music and production while currently working on various Hi-Tech Jazz projects. In 2015 Jon started an independent label, 4EVR 4WRD (Forever Forward) to focus on making electronic music fused with elements of Jazz, Hip Hop, and other styles of music. "It is important for me as a musician to not only continue the rich culture and history of both jazz and electronic music but also use my knowledge, theory, and experience to combine the two and take both genres to the next level!" Dixon has had the chance to perform/record with Artists/Bands such as Galaxy 2 Galaxy, Interstellar Fugitives, Timeline, Amp Fiddler, Jeff Mills, Mike Banks, Derrick May, Francesco Tristano, Kenny Dixon Jr.(Moodymann), Carl Craig, and more in the U.S. and abroad. Detroit's Symphony Hall, The Barbican in London, and Carnegie Hall are just a few venues Jon has performed at. Because of that, Dixon is one of the city's most sought-after musicians for every genre ranging from jazz to techno. He believes that the more versatile and open-minded you are at your craft, the further it will take you. Jon is currently working on multiple projects that are sure to be the beginnings of a new approach and chapter in Detroit's music history.
Toronto Hustle Bio:
Mark Kufner (Toronto Hustle x Selections Label Owner) has been a fixture in Toronto's underground house scene for the last three decades, and has released on some of the most respected labels in house music including Freerange Records, Distant music, Nick Holders DNH records and Ron Allen’s Strobe Records. His combined knowledge and passion for straight up house music has seen him play at many of Toronto's premier venues and warehouse events and he has shared the stage with such iconic figures in dance music including Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, Honey Dijon, Jimpster, Mood II Swing, Dennis Ferrer, Kenny Dope, Detroit Swindle, Satoshi Tomiie, Ron Trent, The Martinez Brothers and Derrick Carter to name a few. Toronto hustle is known for playing an eclectic mixture of new, old and obscure records.
2019 saw Mark launch the Vinyl only label Selections, and 3 years later, the label has become synonymous with a quality over quantity approach. At 8 releases in the label has successfully bridged the gap between iconic figures in dance music and fresh, up and coming talents. The esteemed roster includes artists like Nick Holder, Kai Alcé, Demuir, Black Loops, Dan Only, Nico Lahs, Intr0beatz, 83 West and many many more! Based on the success of Selections, Demuir reached out and hired Mark as the Label manager for the Vinyl only division of Purveyor Underground, forming Purveyor Underground Limited! Releases by the Likes of Rick Wade, Byron The Aquarius and more to come!
Ali Black Bio:
DJ and Producer from Toronto Canada. Collaborations with Luca Cazal for See Double, Black & Medley for Chinatown Records , New Kanada Recordings, Liebe Detail, Cr2 Underground ,Versatile. Ali Black has become a strong contributor to legendary events in Toronto such as Harvest Festival, Over & Over, and Brooks Events in collaboration with Richard Brooks for the iconic Sunnyside Pavilion events which have been going for well over 20 years!!!
