We’ve got a range of transatlantic perspectives on dance music tonight: Merica’s in the house and on our BLITZ floor tonight, with a trio of influential artists from the midwest and east coast that marks the genre’s musical development. We’ve also got the British dance music orientated Ghosttown collective taking over our PLUS floor with bass and breaks.
With close ties to Underground Resistance, the second wave Detroit representatives Scan 7 have been pushing true-school techno and electro with their analogue focussed live-shows. Dave Sumner’s music, also known as Function, stays true to his name with effective and no-nonsense monochrome techno. As one of the scene’s true underground heroes, he’s been pushing the sound of dark and cerebral, hypnotic Techno for years, be it as a DJ and producer in his own right, as a member of the seminal Sandwell District trio, his own Infrastructure label or as an affiliate of the Ostgut Ton-label. There are few artists who have sublimated subterranean techno with such a glossy feel, driving and delicate at the same time.
Representing a new iteration of Techno, based in New York, but a firm favorite in European clubs is Volvox. Ariana Paoletti paints a slinky picture of contemporary Acid and Techno with Goth-& Industrial based colours. Additional sleek and beefy groove-support come from our resident-brothers Glaskin.
The Ghosttown on our PLUS floor is built on Bass & Breaks with a decidedly British musical language. Alongside two of the group’s chief architects, Boothworth & Rompa, the city hosts two members of the FemmeBassMafia collective tonight: Dangermami & Luz1e. The Berlin collective offers Flinta*-& BiPOC-people mentoring, creates new musical spaces too and is built on the important understanding that music, but especially dance music, always has a (socio)political dimension to it. FemmebassMafia keep the activist flame alive and the grooves rolling – Dangermami’s exuberant selection and Luz1e’s sleek and ice-cool picks work together like ying and yang. Last but not least: Selin plays an infectious and enthusiastic blend of Bass and Techno, that doesn’t shy away from Pop & Trance for maximum dancefloor impact.

Transatlantische Techno-Perspektiven stehen heute im Zentrum des Geschehens. Der BLITZ-Floor wird von gleich drei einflussreichen US-Künstler*innen aus dem Midwest und der Ostküste bespielt wohingegen das UK- Dance Music orientierte Kollektiv Ghosttown mit wuchtigen Bass- & Break-Sounds den PLUS Floor bespielt.
Eng vernetzt mit dem legendären Underground Resistance Kollektiv, werden Scan 7 der zweiten Welle des Detroit Techno zugerechnet und spielen ihren Wurzeln entsprechend true-school Techno und Electro und konzentrieren sich dabei auf analoge Live-Sets.
Dave Sumner, auch bekannt als Function, macht seinem Namen mit effektiven und monochromen-Techno alle Ehre. Der Underground-Veteran-hat sich dem düsteren, hypnotischen Sound der smarten Sorte verschrieben - sei es als DJ und Produzent, oder als Mitglied des bahnbrechenden Sandwell District Trio, als Kopf seines eigenen Labels Infrastructure oder Alumni des namhaften Ostgut-Ton-Label. Nur wenigen Künstler*innen ist es gelungen, erdigen Techno mit schimmerndem Glanz zu versehen und dabei gleichermaßen treibend wie filigran zu spielen.
Die New Yorker DJ Volvox kann exemplarisch für die aktuelle Techno-Generation gelten: Ariana Paoletti entwirft eine ebenso verführerische wie vielschichtige Momentaufnahme der aktuellen Acid-geprägten Techno-Szene mit Goth- und Industrial-Einflüssen. Noch mehr sorgsam gewählte und wuchtige Grooves kommen von unseren beiden Resident-Brüdern Glaskin.
Unseren PLUS Floor bespielt diese Nacht das Ghosttown Kollektiv, mit Bass, Breaks und britischer Klangsprache.
Neben den zwei zentralen Kollektivmembern Boothworth & Rompa, übernehmen zwei Mitglieder*innen des Berliner FemmeBassMafia-Kollektivs – Dangermami & Luz1e – auf dem Plus-Floor das Ruder. Die Gruppe hat verstanden, dass Musik – allen voran Dance Musik – historisch immer eine (sozio)politische Komponente inneliegt.
FemmeBassMafia setzen sich für Mentoring-Programme für Flinta*- & BiPOC-Personen ein und schaffen neue musikalische Räume für Experimente, aber auch für sicherere Parties und Vernetzung.
Dangermamis leidenschaftlicher Stil und Luz1es stilvoll-unterkühlte Kuration ergänzen sich wie Ying und Yang. Und zu guter Letzt: Selin spielt eine ansteckende und enthusiastische Melange aus Techno und Bass, die nicht vor Pop & Trance halt macht und maximale Wirkung auf dem Dancefloor entfaltet.
