2220 Arts & Archives, the L.A.based arts center focused on experimentation, improvisation and adventure across a broad spectrum presents three evening celebrating the 70th birthday of composer and Los Angeles native CARL STONE, November 9, 10 & 11 2023.
This series of events is part of a year-long celebration of Stone’s banner year that has included activities taking place in London, Tokyo, Milan, Helsinki, San Francisco, New York, Chicago, Boston, Hobart, Winnipeg, amongst others. The L.A. events will include Stone’s solo performances each evening, collaborations with musicians from Los Angeles, the California premiere by Stone’s ensemble Senile Felines, plus a film presentation with a live soundtrack, video, and a special sculptural installation.
Carl Stone is one of the pioneers of live computer music, using computers in performance since 1986. Stone was born in Los Angeles and now divides his time between California and Japan. His recordings have received numerous awards and commendations- his retrospective albums “Music from the Seventies and Eighties” and “Music from the Eighties and Nineties” on the Unseen Worlds label both won Best Archival Release of the Year from The Wire in 2016 & 2018 respectively. His releases “Stolen Car” (2020) and “Wat Dong Moon Lek” were listed by the Wire in the top ten releases of their respective years. The New York Times cited his 2019 appearance at the Big Ears Festival (USA) as one of the best of the festival that year.
Featured guest artists for the residency include filmmaker Pat O’Neill, pianist Gloria Cheng, guitarist composer Dustin Wong, composer/improvisor Joseph Hammer, videos from Bruce & Norman Yonemoto, film from Adam Beckett, sculptor Mineko Grimmer, and Senile Felines, featuring Stone, Ned Rothenberg (winds) and Soo Yeon Lyuh (haegeum).
