Grand Groove at the Junction with headline Norman (Goodtimes) Jay MBE. The Godfather of the British party scene. “Arguably one of the finest and most respected deejays in the world today” From setting up the pirate radio station Kiss FM back in the mid-eighties with his DJ pal Gordon Mac Normans reputation began to grow exponentially ever since. Whether its from the now legendary corner on West Row Ladbroke Grove with upwards of 5000 people waving their hands in the air cheering him on as he dejayed out of his iconic London red bus at the Notting Hill London Carnival or down at his Paradise Garage style club ‘High on Hope”. The first club in the UK to play a spiritually inspired mix of deep US House and disco classics. Recently his legendary Goodtimes parties have now began to pop up in East London such as at St. John at Hackney Church and Micks Garage, and his new Mister Good times compilations on Sunday best Recordings capture the true spirit of what is like to be at a Norman (Good Groove) Jay party.
Grand Groove is also happy to collaborate on this night with yet another UK legendary house artist. This time from across the border from Edinburgh. None other than one half of the Soul Renegades and 6 Borough project DJ and multi–talented producer Craig Smith.
With a lengthy catalogue of releases spanning over two decades Craig has produced under his own name as well as the Soul Renegades and Sound Signals for labels such as Defected, Atjazz Records, Restless Soul, Soul Heaven, Yoruba Records and his own label, Fifty Fathoms Deep. He’s also remixed tracks for artists such as Roy Ayers, Moloko, Robert Owens, Cevin Fisher, Roland Clark, Hercules & Love Affair. Craig has also released an instrumental hip-hop LP as Sound Signals on SFSB records, with big support from BBC 6 Music’s Craig Charles. As 6th Borough Project with collaborator Graeme Clark (The Revenge), they’ve released 3 albums and many more remixes and productions since their first release in 2008. Esteemed support for their music comes from such heavy hitters as Kenny Dope, Gilles Peterson, Moodyman, Simbad, Jimpster, Danny Krivit, Joe Clausell, FK and Todd Terje He’s also a regular on the airwaves too and you can find his Fifty Fathoms and Find Your Rhythms shows on Soundcloud.
Supporting these two behemoths on the night is local resident DJ J. Ex Hard Times DJ at club Panache. A Mecca in the house scene during the 90’s golden years of clubbing. J now living locally will be doing his share of the heavy lifting by spinning a vinyl only set on the night really taking things back to the traditional old school house party vibe. During the years 1994-2000 up in sunny Mirfield Yorkshire The Hardtimes club played host to some of the biggest legends in house at that time including, Todd Terry, Louie Vega and Steve ‘silk’ Hurley. Look out for some of these names in future Grand Groove events.
A branch of the iconic 1970’s original South Bronx Hip Hop movement The Universal Zulu Nation Sound System carry that tradition forward never forgetting its Hip Hop roots as it fuses musical genres across the board taking Hip Hops innovative and experimental approach to mixing music right into contemporary music genres primarily dance. Expect a Hip HOP 101 dance party everything from DJ Kool Herc style breaks to afrika bambaataa and the Soul Sonic force from Run DMC to Armand Van Helden, from Chic to Daft Punk and everything else in between to warm up the crowd for the night.
Come in your most outlandish gear house and Hip Hop retro gear you have as “fly” as you like. Anything goes suede gazelles, Hawaiian shirts, oversized dukey chains, kango bucket hats, Adidas tracksuits and shell toes with fat laces and bring your whistles and joysticks.
