  • Perseverance, dedication, longevity, tenacity, growth. There’s are some of the words that describe JUICE. Each event is a unique and wonderful experience created by *you all,* when we share this music together. So it gives us great pleasure to announce our 19th Anniversary celebration Friday March 22nd, 2024, featuring this legend and one of the bosses of the genre—MAKOTO (Human Elements / Hospital / UK-Japan), for his first appearance in Portland! To add to the fire of this session is another PDX first as we welcome the mighty DEGS (Hospital / UK) for a very special vocal/DJ set. In keeping with a night of headliners and Portland premiers, we’re stoked to welcome the delightful and incredible vocalist SOFI MARI (US-Ca/UK) to host the night; *and* rising Manchester star Think Tonk (V Recs/Hospital/UK) for a special appearance at JUICE. (We regret that Femme.Antics will not be able to make this event.) Local support is always top notch with our longest-running resident Definition Positive (US-Salem), along with the finest vocal rhythms from MC Questionmark (US/UK-Portland). Headliners start to finish as we do! Come early, dance and stay late! It’s JUICE’s mission to continue to showcase the best that deep soulful DnB offers with a hybrid of in-person & livestream feature sessions on select last Fridays of the month….(and occasionally other special dates)! Born, raised and still based in Tokyo, Makoto was influenced at a young age by a wide variety of music ranging from classical to soul and funk. Upon hearing the soundtrack to The Last Emperor by the academy award-winning composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, Makoto was so inspired that he made a life-changing decision – to pursue a career in music.   He went on to complete an Acoustic Engineering major at Nippon University, and having been introduced to drum and bass through listening to the radio shows of Giles Peterson on Kiss FM and BBC Radio 1, Makoto began experimenting with the genre through his own compositions. To him the appeal of this relatively new form of music was simple – drum and bass was just “very futuristic and cool”. His productions were of such quality that they caught the attention of none other than the legendary LTJ Bukem, who went on to sign Makoto to his seminal Good Looking Records imprint in 1999.    To paraphrase a lyric from one of his most famous tracks, music has never let Makoto down. Since that fateful signing in 1999, Makoto has gone on to be one of the most highly respected artists in the genre, pushing his unique blend of fast breaks and soul-drenched music to every corner of the globe as both a DJ and a producer. His discography includes 2 LPs, Live DJ Mix, a large number of EPs and numerous tracks featured on the world famous ‘Earth’ and ‘Progression Sessions’ compilation albums. Some of his most notable releases include his debut album ‘Human Elements’, which was released in 2003 and was widely praised for bringing the feeling of 70s soul music into the 21st century, and ‘Progression Sessions: Japan Live 2003’, which introduced his dynamic musical partnership with talented female vocalist Deeizm to the world. He achieved industry-wide acclaim through his powerful collaboration with LTJ Bukem’s ever present stage partner MC Conrad in 2005 through ‘Golden Girl’. The track was widely praised and played by DJs across the many sub-genres of drum and bass and became a certified genre anthem all over the world.   Incidentally, Golden Girl and 2nd Album ‘Believe In My Soul’ were to be one of Makoto’s final releases for Good Looking Records. With a slightly different direction and more creative freedom in mind, Makoto began to release music for other labels such as DJ Zinc‘s Bingo Beats, London Elektricity‘s Hospital Records, Fabio‘s Creative Source and of course, DJ Marky‘s Innerground Records. His musical connection with Marky runs deep, and was solidified with his very own mix cd released on Marky’s label in 2009 titled ‘DJ Marky & Friends presents Makoto’. The pair went on to collaborate and release a number of tracks together the most recent being the 12 inch single “Aquarius / Good Old Days”.    Alongside this hefty release timeline and a touring schedule jam-packed with gigs across Asia, Europe, UK and USA, Makoto has been busy setting up his own label – HE:Digital. Focusing mainly on digital releases, the label has given Makoto an opportunity to not only release his own material, but that of others as well. In 2010 he released the compilation album ‘HE:Possibilities’ through the label. The release was aimed at drawing attention to up and coming producers from Japan. More recently, he was proud to put out the charity compilation album ‘Something We Can Do’ where all profits were donated to the Red Cross in Japan to help the victims of the tragic tsunami and earthquake which struck the country.    Together with these releases, the full-length album for his own label Human Elements titled ‘Souled Out’ featured many talented vocalists and session musicians, and is a culmination of the breadth of experience and talent Makoto brings to each track which credits his name.    2017 opened the next chapter for Makoto, signing exclusive to Hospital Records, he kicked off the year with a brand new track ‘Speed Of Life’ on their celebratory ‘We Are 21’ compilation and now presenting his fifth solo album ‘Salvation’. A perfect fit bringing that trademark sound across 14 tracks. Since then, he has released 2 full albums ‘Tomodachi Sessions’ (2019) which was nominated for Drum & Bass Arena Awards best album category in 2019 and ‘Motion Of Change’ (2022) on the label, also he has been providing several tracks on their compilation albums. Makoto continues to be one of the most consistent and influential artists to date in the drum & bass scene. ++~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~++ DEGS Hospital Records / UK-London ++~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~++ Music has always been in Degs’ blood, an accomplished pianist, guitarist, and singer with militant flow and a golden voice, spanning eclectic tastes molded by a musical family. The portal to the world of drum & bass was opened for Degs after first hearing the sounds of Bad Company and London Elektricity at 15 years old. Six years down the line, he picked up the mic and got on the stage. He swiftly became one of jump up’s best-kept secrets, earning himself resident spots at shows across Europe. Years later, he’s honed his craft and become adept in many styles. With a strong R&B and hip hop influence, his songwriting and MCing soon took a soulful turn proving the adaptability and musical prowess of this accomplished songwriter. Degs draws upon a broad set of lyrical forms, fusing fast sprays with harmonious singing inspired by the likes of Fats, Eksman, and Dynamite. It’s no easy feat to master the dual-craft of rapping and singing, with few MC’s possessing the skills shown by the latest artist to join the Hospital family. His debut single Poveglia (feat De:Tune) was an overwhelming success that garnered support in clubs across the globe and became one of the D+B anthems of summer 2018. With over 500,000 streams on his debut single, he moved from strength to strength, following ‘Poveglia’ up with a sterling ‘Mixtape Sprayout’, featuring unique verses sitting atop iconic Hospital classics, including the ‘Black Sheep’ freestyle which brought him to the attention of London Elektricity. Now one of the most sought-after MCs on the circuit, the future is exceedingly bright for Hospital’s most recent vocalist. ++~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~++ SOFI MARI V Recordings / Function Records / Inperspective / UK/US-Sacramento ++~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~++ She will sing it, rhyme it, speak it; Sofi Mari is an artist who’s been professionally performing since 2003 & has been immersed in the drum & Bass/Jungle scene since 2008. Over the years she has hosted many topline d&b DJ sets including the likes of: Goldie, Storm, Bailey, Jumping Jack Frost, Utah Jazz, Source Direct, Flight, Marky, Empress, AK1200, Paul T & Ed Oberon, BeeCee, Sweetpea, Total Science, Urban Dawn, Chris Inperspective, Equinox + many more! She was even more honored to have been nominated the following year as Best Breakthrough Jungle MC for the same awards ceremony; both years nominated under her old alias. In 2019 Sofi Mari teamed up with producer & live Drummer ‘Septabeat’ fulfilling her dream of performing drum & bass live with an instrumentalist. This enabled her to be one of the first vocalist/MCs to curate the ‘Sun & Bass LIVE! Sessions’ 2019 at the renowned Sun & Bass festival in Sardinia, Italy. The event showcased a number of topline drum & bass vocalists supported by a live band at Ambra Day. This then led her to perform at V Recordings Live & become a live events coordinator for Eloisa Records. Sofi has also gotten back into her editorial work. She's a writer for Dynamics-music.com; a database and blog celebrating female artists in bass music. With articles covering various artists, new music and more, be sure to check out the site and its news section. Sofi Mari has been busy in the studio for 2021 releasing tunes on some groundbreaking projects such as Riya & Collette Warren’s self release “Two Sides of Everything”; as well on fellow V Recordings talent T.R.A.C. & Maverick Soul’s “Sonically Speaking” LP. She had her first release on Yana Music with “Queen” by Theatrix as well as “Emotions” by Stretch & Enjoy on AKO Beatz.
