Artist and Composer Ben Frost will appear in support of his first solo album since 2017’s groundbreaking The Centre Cannot Hold. Over the last years the composer’s prolific output has focused on creating cinematographic scores, penning music for Netflix's acclaimed Dark and 1899, composing an opera, or shaping sound for installations with Richard Mosse among other. Frost’s compositions are always created with an acute awareness of the listener and their comfort thresholds, exploiting every extreme of pitch and volume. In a new live collaboration with Greg Kubacki of U.S. math/metalcore band Car Bomb and celebrated audiovisual artist Tarik Barri, Frost continues to expand his visceral approach to sonic and cinematic experimentalism.
HJirok is a project by renowned singer Hani Mojtahedy and Andi Toma (Mouse on Mars) that addresses the devastating effects of climate change in the Iranian-Kurdish region and the Iraqi-Kurdish border area. Blending the fictional character of HJirok, a water spirit that invokes a holistic view of the region, and harsh political realities, the artists process the impulses of the struggle for freedom in Iran as part of its complaint about alienation, division, and man-made disasters. Water is a resource that is reaching its limits, leading to conflicts in nature and between the nations in the region. HJirok waits in her element, amidst waterfalls, for people to return to her and accept her gifts in their true meaning, instead of choosing exploitation and oppression. It's not too late, she sings.
The concert takes place within CTM Festival’s 25th anniversary edition, which runs January 26 to February 4, 2024. Under the theme »Sustain,« CTM 2024 presents the current state of adventurous music, from pulsating dance floor to shared moments of artistic intimacy. A word that touches opposite polarities of our contemporary experience, »sustain« speaks of the empathy and determination that nourish us, as well as of our anxieties, losses, and pains. In the word »sustain« we sense both what we are going through while hearing what needs to be done. What if sustain were a sound?
