With the winter solstice already in the rearview mirror and 2024 in full effect, Realismo Magico are back with sonic rituals to bless the new year, with another evening of audio occultism stretching from psychotropic DJ sets to live drag and contemporary dance collaborations. It’s liminal music for a liminal time of year, with plenty of heaters to thaw out the dancefloor.
Starting the year as they mean to go on, this edition of the crew’s kaleidoscopic clubnight series promises to be, quite possibly, their most stacked line-up to date, with the Realismo Magico residents’ usual eclectic selections bolstered by sets from special guests No Moon, Laurel and Temple. No Moon’s cosmos-seeking sets channel celestial energy through the decks, with deep dance excursions delivered with the same emotional heft and lithe, organic sensibility as his own acclaimed productions (there’s a reason everyone from Nazira to the late, great Andrew Weatherall have dropped his tracks in mixes). New Zealand via Berlin DJ Laurel brings a similarly vital, organic energy to the proceedings, grounded in a more earthy, natural headspace with tendrils of astral jazz and disco threaded together into an overflowing abundance of inescapable grooves.
Opening ceremonies come from enigmatic UK producer Temple, with their debut DJ performance. Where Temple’s cavernous productions explore sacred music in all its expansive, myriad forms, from videogame atmospherics to coruscating noise, this set brings us back to the urban sprawl, capturing the otherworldly nature of the city at night with concrete rhythms drenched in neon.
Rounding out the proceedings are two extra special sets from Realismo Magico residents Aalia and Rayne x Kekik. One of the most exciting new voices in the Berlin club scene, Egyptian DJ Aalia sidesteps western club cliches entirely, instead mining rich veins of Arabic percussive traditions and mystic melodics for a transcendent rhythm workout. Cashmere and Root Radio resident Rayne joins forces with drag performer and multi-disciplinary artist Kekik for a special live collaboration, with Rayne’s eclectic selections given physical form through Kekik’s fluid movements, leading the dance towards transcendence.
