Copenhagen’s standout Fast Forward Productions returns for a full-venue takeover. The party series and label stands at the forefront of a new generation of queer artists in electronic music. Fast Forward pushes tempos, sonics and aesthetics into a future-tripped, confrontational/cheeky rave rapture. Founder Sugar headlines in BASEMENT. His artistic versatility and fearlessness are unmissable; whether in full-on techno mode or in a more beat-mangled groove, Sugar brings a cultivated allure to the raw power and a pristine attention to detail that elevates the sonic maelstrom. Resident Newa returns. Her attuned, open approach to techno sets her apart. The genre’s rugged, urgent roots get a full showcase in her sets, which never shy away from wild swing and hardware grit. Still, she keeps a balance of density to air, with plenty of room to breathe. NY’s Ryker opens it up. The Salon founder drives it home with pulsating, metallic shimmer and bold, undiluted colors.
Schacke continues his reign. Few artists remain as much of a moving target as Schacke, but he makes it look easy. Although he has a background in feverish noise, Schacke’s breakthrough was a bit of technoid eurodance: in 2019, “Kisloty People” made them a household name, to ravers at least. But following that breakout, he’s kept evolving. He displays as deft a hand with bold, bring bangers as he is with heaving, industrial-strength warehouse sounds. A Schacke set is guaranteed to throw more than a few curveballs. It’s a testament to his talent that he pulls it off over and over again. x3butterfly matches the energy with a rowdy, unyielding style. Tweaking, jacked rhythms wrap themselves around glistening, sci-fi textures and moments of raw, unvarnished humanity. Jek returns. The NY mainstay has a calm, unhurried cool that he brings even to the manic and hard-edged.
