- Return to the Source — Day 1 Clubs are vital cultural spaces that significantly influence a city: how attractive it is to live in and the quality of life for its inhabitants. Berlin is a telling example, a world-renowned club culture has established itself since the fall of the Berlin Wall, which is vitally important culturally but also economically. These clubs not only provide entertainment, but also serve as platforms for self-expression and community for young people, which improves their quality of life and gives them spaces to feel attachment. However, the situation in infrastructurally weak regions and cities is often difficult, as there is a lack of spaces that speak to young people. This leads to negative effects such as resignation and emigration. To counter these challenges, it is important to create spaces where young people can develop and flourish, which will ultimately contribute to improving these cities. Clubs are also epicenters of culture in the broadest sense, where avant-gardes question social norms and explore alternative realities, where popular culture takes its cues for the future. They are stages for individual performances and collective experiences, creating community and identity. Clubs are inclusive for all kinds of people, but also protected spaces that have an element of exclusivity so that the guests inside feel safer, and not anyone can come in who might have questionable motives. And even - or perhaps especially - in the digital age, clubs demonstrate the unbroken desire to experience spaces, music and intense sensory experiences together. Responsibility means that both individuals and companies take care of themselves and others, avoid harm and promote the development of all. This responsibility is particularly important in club culture, as clubs are part of the social fabric and benefit from a healthy society. They must therefore also take a stand on current social issues and take action against negative trends such as racism and discrimination. Clubs should advocate peaceful, tolerant coexistence and represent the values of diversity and freedom. They should also help young people to become independent and contribute to positive change and development in society. Ultimately, it is the responsibility of club culture to make these contributions and set an example. To work towards this goal, the Tresor Foundation Berlin has opened the doors of the Academy of Subcultural Understanding. We work with young people who want to create subcultural spaces in their cities. The aim of the Academy is to coach and motivate young makers with know-how and to support their idea for a venue. Our research is at the intersection of urbanism, community-building and subcultures. As a platform for knowledge exchange, we bring young people and researchers together with local experts to learn from each other - with the common goal of creating long-lasting subcultural spaces. It would be wonderful if the decision makers in the city of Detroit would make sure to support young club makers to create such spaces and realize their mission. The youth of Detroit are vibrant, and deserve many places in which to go, these concepts should be supported by the city, as it will only improve the City of Detroit in the long run. Weekends like Return to the Source just go to show what Detroit could be. Tresor Academy 2024 tresor.foundation/academy ––––– Model 500 presented in part by Carhartt WIP. ––––– Return to the Source 2024 is an organic evolution of the original concept, with careful attention to detail put in at every level. Our weekend at the Tangent includes 4 parties for the price of one weekend wristband, with an outdoor area containing a harm reduction zone, food truck, and an incredible outdoor sound system. Once the music starts at No Way Back on Sunday night, it won't end until Tuesday morning — 32 hours of continuous music. A weekend wristband will allow you to experience this ever changing environment with no interruptions. ––––– PSA: Do not purchase tickets outside of RA. People selling tickets as PDFs, screenshots, etc are often trying to scam you. Invalid tickets can not be honored at the door.
