NYC, 4/4: Tender beauty meets straight-to-the-brain wildness at Nowadays. Hieroglyphic Being joins us from Chicago alongside Dripping all-stars Poncili Creación and Elori Saxl. Lychee makes their debut, and organizers Relaxer and Baby Leo open up each portion of the program, first with a concert from the former, then a club set from the latter.
Hieroglyphic Being is one of dance music's most fearless and rawly-imaginative voices. Across at least eight aliases (who's counting, really?), his sprawling discography fuses blown out jacking percussion, dirty sex jams, glistening beauty, industrial/house hybrids, collaborations with artists like the Sun Ra Arketstra, and way way more. His performances are truly unique, mind melting sessions. He joins for a live set.
If you were at Dripping's inaugural festival in 2023, you know Poncili Creación. The twin brother puppeteer duo blew all minds with an unhinged performance at sundown. Tapping into a primal id, they guide the audience into that internal creative fount with absurdist chaos, puerile humor, Freudian catharsis and some serious WWE-level crowd work.
Elori Saxl's transportive compositions dive beneath the waves. Her achingly beautiful works slow down the tempo and radiate a deeply-focused, mercurial power. At the festival, she led a quartet at Saturday's concert. It was a breathtaking moment of poised calm. For this one, she'll perform solo and with a collaborator. Let's fucking go.
Lychee closes the night with immaculate ooze. Baby Leo opens the club portion with heavy dub infused bass weight, for steppers and trippers only. Relaxer opens the concert with a performance of selections from his new album "In Softening Air," out April 1st.
