Seven acts that have all left an impression on your humble Midwest promoter are now gathered and split among two rooms. With this cadre of unique midwest and Baltimore talent will be a team of seasoned professionals to amplify soundwaves, spread dizzying lights, and assist with a safe experience for all humans attending. To the headliners!
Rod Modell (a.k.a. Deepchord) is a sound-designer with 25 years involvement in electronic music and over 50 releases under various aliases and styles. Beginning with more “industrial” and “ambient” forms of sonic experimentation (working with Kim Cascone and his -then- record-label Silent, and performing with notable industrial acts such as Chris & Cosey and SPK). Submerged in the blossoming Detroit Techno scene (early 1990’s), a journey from a more experimental sound into Detroit’s techno-world was inevitable. Modell co-founded the Deepchord record label in Detroit during the mid-90’s. Deepchord respected and admired (fellow Detroiters) Underground Resistance for their D.I.Y. attitude and independence. It was because of this respect and admiration that Deepchord declined offers from top techno labels of the time, in favor of doing it by themselves. Many consider Deepchord to be the second wave of the “Basic Channel sound”, and came years before the onslaught of imitators.
Among his many releases, Midwest Plenty implores you to check out his Deepchord and Rod Modell output on labels like astral industries, modern love, and echospace. From above, it is easy to understand why Rod was on a very short list to bring in for a Midwest Plenty party; he is an indelible part of Detroit's techno history as well as a relentless innovator within the DIY realm. For April 20, Rod is performing a special peak time live set simply never to be repeated.
Following Rod will be Baltimore's own Jacq Jill. Since their brilliant boiler room set in 2019, they have established themselves as part of the DC and Baltimore underground from both their welcoming disposition and their impeccably selected, dynamic DJ sets. With 10 years of professional experience inside the booths of Basement, Nowadays, and countless warehouses in Baltimore, they are ready for the assignment of following a true hero among dub techno heads in the DMV.
Directly before Rod will be an artist that could only originate in a place like Detroit: Fusegrade. Mixing a striking combination of energy, creativity, and enthusiasm, Fusegrade will have the floor in quite a stir before Deepchord's performance. Fusegrade's reverence for Detroit's music history started in infancy while surrounded by many of its beloved artists. These familiar faces helped them develop into a true late night DJ visionary. They performed during Movement in 2022 and have since founded the very well regarded Formula events with fellow Detroiter 2Lanes.
Before we lose your attention and hopefully after you have already hit buy, get to know the Room 2 opener, Sard. Sard is most known for his dynamic live PA work, whether headlining major events like OBSERVE DETROIT or intimate late night gatherings deep in the cornfields of western Minnesota for The Great Beyond. In fact, we asked him to bring that level of intimacy and careful machine work to Baltimore for a special live set at peak time. He will provide the perfect complement to the thunderous techno from Room 1 with delicate, analog sounding wizardry. A set not to be missed if synapse delighting sonics are your thing.
Also in Room 2 will be a downtempo set from new face DJ Blue Angel. Well, not new to any respectable Baltimore house head. Her weekly show Angel and Ghost is a showcase of house music perfect for unwinding from a Monday (or really any day). We have asked her to just play what she feels which will make her set just as intimate as sard. Truly, we want Room 2 to be a place to reset the mind.
So who better than DJ Scott Kelly to open the evening with his auspicious blend of ambient techno spanning multiple decades and emotional wavelengths. It is a long evening of very talented music everywhere. If you are going to endure the whole thing be sure to post up in Room 2 early.
For the diligent reader, we reward you with some final words on Midwest Plenty's dear companion Ben Jenkins. While Ben is a proud Memphis native who has played all over the midwest including Detroit, Knoxville, and Pittsburgh, Baltimore could be a second home. He was an essential part of the Vague Output crew either in performance, supplying basebins or offering his supple geophone pillow. We got him reprieve from household duties to fully commit to Room 1, Act 1 DJing when doors open.
Finally, we have to emphasize safety as a priority for the night. At the ticket table you can expect to find a host of testing kits, guides, and other implements to keep you going for the full seven hours. On the floor will be monitors in conspicuous fashions who are well versed in what can happen within warehouses late at night.
As with every Midwest Plenty event, the managers, owners, and promoters have *Absolutely zero tolerance for sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, unsolicited touching, or any other oppressive behavior*. The venue will help express this zero tolerance policy and all ticket holders will be expected to follow it. Failure to comply with the zero tolerance policy will result in ejection from the event and potentially any future events held both at the space and by the respective host promoters. Yes, this means you.
