On May 9th, Zenaari, an experimental and electroacoustic music series, will feature Stan Westerhus, a central figure in Norway's avant-garde jazz scene, as an artist, researcher, and composer at BASSIANI. A classically trained jazz musician decided to sculpt his unique sound and narrative on the free, improvisational flow of guitar and its various effects. His ever-changing, unpredictable, diverse, and spontaneous live performances are instilled with otherworldly mystique, where the guitar fills the auditorium with unheard soundscapes, textures, melodies, and energy. Stian Westerhus' extraordinary approach left a distinct mark on the music of prominent avant-garde jazz bands like Jaga Jazzist and Puma. Collaborations with musicians like Nils Petter Molvær, Arve Henriksen, and Sidsel Endresen, he was also deeply engaged with symphonic and Jazz orchestras, in his pursuit of expanding his sonic horizons. His studio albums, released under labels like Grammofon and House of Mythology, received critical acclaim, including the Norwegian Grammy Award.
Tbilisi-based musician, vocalist, composer, and writer Aine Merme, also known as Natuka Natsvlishvili, graces the Zennari stage with a landmark performance. Her work stands out due to her unconventional approach to composing music. Although she often follows classical music structures, she fearlessly pushes the boundaries of harmony by infusing it with multi-layered, intense melodies and subtly nuanced phrases. Aine Merme extends the possibilities of instruments, assigning them non-traditional roles, and primarily focuses on playing and creating music specifically for the guitar.
