Born in Chicago in 1959, Marshall was a central figure in the development of the Chicago house scene and produced seminal house anthems including ‘Move Your Body’, ‘7 Ways To Jack’ and ‘Open Our Eyes’. He has worked with the best in the business, from fellow founding father Frankie Knuckles to Roy Davis Jr., Steve ‘Silk’ Hurley, Felix Da Housecat and Lil Louis. Marshall has had a leading hand in the growth of the acid and deep house movements and even today continues to evolve these genres amid dooms-dayers predicting their collective demise. Initially inspired by rock music, regular trips to Chicago’s famed Music Box Club in the mid-1980s turned Marshall onto the sounds of early house music. Marshall’s first release, 1985’s ‘Go Wild Rhythm Trax’ on Virgo Records, demonstrated Marshall had the talent vital to succeed in such a fickle industry. ‘Move Your Body’, originally a production Marshall had passed onto Ron Hardy, was released on Trax Records in 1986 and is today recognised as a genre-defining release, having been subtitled and acclaimed ‘The House Music Anthem’. The mid-1980s gave way to the development of acid house, and Marshall actively participated in the movement’s growth through his use of the Roland TB303. The release in 1987 of ‘Acid Trax’ launched the career of DJ Pierre and Marshall went on to work with the likes of Ten City, Robert Owens, Keith Thompson and Pierre’s collective Phuture. Forever in search of fresh inspiration, Marshall switched his focus in the late 1980s from acid house to the then relatively new sub-genre of deep house. ‘Open Our Eyes’, released on Big Beat in 1988, was a huge success; nowhere before had a producer been able to make such an emotional connection with the listener, at the same time maintaining the physical connection necessary for it to succeed on the dance floor. Through his work with vocalists like Kim Mazelle, Ce Ce Rogers and Curtis McClaine, Marshall produced hits on labels including Republic UK, Trax Records, Atlantic and Syncopate. Juggling production and remix duties with a hectic touring schedule, Marshall was the headline act in the first House Music Tour of Europe in 1987 and enjoyed regular gigs in clubs around the US, most notably in Chicago. In 1990 Marshall retired from the scene following the shelving of a massive project he took on with Big Beat Records, but re-appeared behind the decks three years later feeling reenergised and with an increased drive and passion for house music. He moved to London and began a five-year residency with the Tribal Gathering and Big Love events. His debut artist album, 1997’s ‘Day Of The Onion’, received critical acclaim across the board, as did his mix compilations including 1996’s Tribal Gathering release – which he mixed with fellow residents James Lavelle and Gayle San - and his 1997 effort, ‘Chicago House 86-91: The Definitive Story’. The new millennium saw original production take a back seat, with Marshall instead releasing several mix compilations, including 2001’s ‘Welcome to The World Of Marshall Jefferson – A Testament to House Music’, 2003’s ‘Move Your Body: The Evolution of Chicago House’ and 2004’s ‘Marshall Jefferson Presents The Foundations of House’, released on the UK’s Suss’d Records. Original releases, when they did drop, always fared well. Marshall’s collaboration with Serge Imhof on ‘69%’ on ATFC’s OnePhatDeeva imprint was a defining release for the then relatively new label. 2004 saw Marshall team up with DJ Pierre once more to release ‘Clap Your Hands (Everybody Dance)’ on the UK’s Essence Records. The following year Marshall appeared at London club Pacha as part of their ‘Fathers of House’ events, a series celebrating house music’s heroes from past and present. He is currently touring extensively, continuing to spread his love of music around the world. Robert Owens Ask any fan of dance music who their favourite male vocalist is and nine times out of ten Robert Owens name will come back. Sure, there are other great male house vocalists out there, but with more than twenty years as a gifted singer, songwriter, producer and DJ under his belt, Robert has not so much embellished house music as played a large part in defining it. 'Tears', 'I'll Be Your Friend' and 'Ordinary People' are just some of the tunes that have borne his black velvet voice and gone on to become truly classic dance records. Finally, 2008 will see the release of Robert Owens first artist album in 10 years - 'Night-time Stories'. Like many other great vocalists, Robert Owens began his career singing in church gospel choirs.. Entry into the nascent world of house music came not through Robert’s singing but his skills as a DJ. By the time people like Ron Hardy and Frankie Knuckles were designing house music’s blueprint on the dancefloors of legendary venues like the Warehouse and the Music Box, Robert was DJing at block parties and smaller clubs in Chicago. In 1985 Robert met pioneering Chicago producer Larry Heard, who invited him into his studio. Together they formed Fingers Inc with Ron Wilson and released a series of excellent singles such as 'Mysteries Of Love' or the instantly recognisable house standard 'Can You Feel It'. This cooperation culminated in one of house music’s first full-length albums 'Another Side' in 1988, after which the group amicably disbanded to follow their individual solo careers. Following the call of Frankie Knuckles, Robert went to New York in 1989 to record a track with the Def Mix posse – consisting of David Morales, Satoshi Tomiie and Frankie himself. This tune, so casually constructed, was to become one of clubland’s most emotive and defining moments: the sublime 'Tears'. That song all about his life and struggles was the ignition of Roberts successful career as a solo artist. Signing with 4th & Broadway in 1990 he showcased his beautiful church-honed vocals and heartfelt lyrical style on the album 'Rhythms In Me', completely produced by the Def Mix crew. His 1991 single 'I’ll Be Your Friend' finally gave Robert the overground success he so obviously deserved, climbing the charts to #1 all over the world! Leaving New York behind, Robert relocated to London in 1993 where he founded his own label imprint Musical Directions and started assembling his own studio. He continued composing and singing on a series of dance classics such as 'Love Will Find Its Way' or 'Ordinary People' and collaborated with a remarkable list of influencial artists like Sandy Rivera and Photek (on his smash hit 'Mine to Give'), and more recently with Ron Trent and Coldcut (on the stunning 'Walk a Mile in my Shoes' single). But Robert also stayed true to his records spinning club roots. As an innovative and globally in-demand DJ he is still dazzling crowds across the UK, Europe, Japan and America with his special blend of the deepest house and electronica. He also established two successful London club residencies – Journeys at Egg and 2 Feet Deep at The Key. Which brings us to “Night-Time Stories”. Robert’s latest musical offering is an incredibly cohesive collection of collaborations with some of contemporary house music’s biggest and most respected names. Producers like Wahoo, Jimpster, Atjazz, Charles Webster, Simbad, Marc Romboy, Kid Massive, Kirk Degiorgio and Ian Pooley all demonstrate their talents, which combined with Robert’s famous voice, make this one of the most exciting and anticipated dance records of 2008! The first single release 'Merging' (produced by Dutch duo TJ Kong & Nuno Dos Santos) is already raising the roof worldwide getting love and massive support from key players like Osunlade, Frank Roger, Fred Everything, Marcus Worgul, King Britt, Jimpster, Ashley Beedle, Peter Kruder… This overwhelming response is heralding a shift in the state of the art: people are getting weary of minimalistic tracks – they want some vocals back in – and they want some soul back in! You are sure to get the full load of soul when Robert is performing with his Live Band. To fuse house music with real instrumentation has been a dream of Roberts for a long time. His album 'Journeys' which was released in Japan only in 1997 already highlighted this new new musical routes. Together with his band – which features Dan Berkson (Poker Flat) on keys and a guitarist and percussionist – he performs what is essentially live house with a jazz flavour. The tracklist is a mix of Roberts classics and new album material. To many people the amazing show was the highlight of Big Chill Festival 2006. So there you have it. From the gritty but sublime Trax of yesteryear to the forward-looking projects of today, Robert Owens is one of dance music's true legends, a man who has his roots in the future and his feet planted firmly on the earth - and a man who has never been afraid of sharing himself with others. PAUL WOOLFORD "If you need any more evidence that Mr Neverending-Purple-Patch is doing things with percussion (in all it's different flavours) that would make Richie Hawtin proud, then this is it 10/10" 'Pandemonium' Single of the Month IDJ MAGAZINE "A Staggeringly on-form Paul Woolford provides the missing ingredient. For reference points, think Carl Craig's epic version of Junior Boys' 'Like A Child'. Yup, that good." DJ MAGAZINE review of Paul Woolford's Morgan Geist Remix "The highlight of the Space Terraza this summer 2009 at We Love. Every week Paul Woolford clarified, refined and defined the sound of one of the most important rooms in contemporary dance music each Sunday." WELOVESPACE "Paul Woolford's "The Truth" should be filed in anyone's collection next to other classic UK techno albums such as LFO's "LFO" Chemical Brothers' "Exit Planet Dust", Underworld's "Dubnobasswithmyheadman" and Aphex Twin's "I Care Because You Do" RESIDENT ADVISOR Through his work as Dj, Producer, Dancefloor experimentalist, Remixer, Collaborator and label owner, Paul Woolford has succeeded in bringing a rare level of artistry to the world of modern dance music and in doing so, made an enduring global impact. His name is synonymous with high-quality. Early 2010 will see Woolford push his creativity even further with a with Renaissance Platform double CD release cultivated from a large amount of the finest quality original material from right across the house & techno spectrum, some brand-new material solely produced for this release, exclusive re-edits, exclusive takes on Woolford remixes and all lovingly crafted, spliced & diced using modern technology. As 2010 begins, the projects through Woolford's Intimacy studio in 2009 alone include Depeche Mode (the single "Hole To Feed" released December 7th on Mute), Simian Mobile Disco featuring Jamie Lidell ("Off The Map" forthcoming 2010), Morgan Geist "The Shore" for Environ (for which Beatportal awarded a 'Bomb Alert' and DJ Mag included in their 'Killers'), remixes on the Ewan Pearson-produced band Delphic for R&S, The Juan Maclean "Happy House" for New York's DFA, DJ Hell feat P.Diddy "The DJ" for Gigolo in Berlin, and Chelonis R. Jones "The Cockpit" for Systematic, also in Germany. On top of these remixes, there has been a fierce release schedule for Woolford's own singles on his Intimacy imprint which began in April with "Pandemonium", followed in May with "Timebomb" and continued into Autumn with the "False Prophet EP". These tracks sparked feverish dj reactions from the global elite of house & techno including the likes of In the cannon for early 2010 is a Renaissance Double CD Compilation consisting of many exclusive tracks, re-edits and remixes and brand new Bobby Peru material to include James Zabiela's re-working of "Knives" as well as a series of singles for Intimacy and other cutting-edge European labels. Aside from these projects, Woolford has worked on production and remixes for the Mercury Music Prize-nominated act Maps for Mute Records, and is also working with the band Delphic in various capacities, having sequenced their Minimix for Annie Mac's Radio 1 show. The quality of each of these projects speaks for itself. Initially inspired by the constant throb of the radio throughout his childhood, the seeds of his future direction were sewn by the time a record-collecting addiction kicked in properly during his teenage years. This insatiable appetite for musical stimulation has driven Woolford to explore far beyond the cutting- edge house and techno that is his stock-in-trade, and led him down more experimental paths, embracing aspects of improvised jazz through his collaborative work with Paul Hession, and taking huge inspiration from the modern composition of Steve Reich. All this is distilled within the techno dynamic that Woolford has made second-nature. Paul Woolford tours the world constantly as a guest dj of the finest clubs and festivals, and in keeping with this made his peak-time saturday night debut at Spain's esteemed Benicassim in summer 2009 and also at Glastonbury. Both shows are more famed for their rock acts and it's testament to Woolford's wide-range and inclusive values that he is as much a viable option to these events as he is to a 500 capacity underground sweatbox such as D-Edge in Sao Paolo. Other events have included Warung in Santa Catarina, Womb in Tokyo, Goa in Madrid, Panaramabar in Berlin, Il Muretto in Venice where he held a 6-week summer residency, Chicago's Smartbar, Paris' The Mix, Manchester's Sankeys & The Electric Chair, Buenos Aires and Sao Paolo's Pacha, Riccione's Cocorico, Dusseldorf's Tribehouse, LA's Avalon, Las Vegas' Jet, Milan's Amnesia, Zurich's Q Club, a career-defining performance in 2007 at Serbia's Exit Festival, Buenos Aires' Creamfields event twice, Global Gathering, The Glade Festival, Glastonbury ) and has a frequently exhausting schedule that runs into overdrive in the summer when his main weekly residency at WeLoveSpace on Sundays in Ibiza starts. He was awarded 'Best Newcomer' in Ibiza's DJ Awards in 2006 and nominated for one of DJ Magazine's 'Best Of British' Awards in 2007. In addition to this, he now holds a monthly UK residency at Matter London at which he can approach things in a different manner more appropriate for this worldwide hub of dance music. It is with this highly personal and chameleon-like ability that Woolford makes his mark, creating bespoke re-edits built purposefully for each environment, ensuring that you KNOW it is Woolford and Woolford-only in the booth when you hear them. Many know Paul Woolford's name through the 2005 slow-burning hit "Erotic Discourse", released on 2020 Vision, the Leeds label with which he made his name initially. The success of this proved he has the ability to create a genre-defining sound and led to sales of over 15,000, capturing the imagination of DJs across the board from The Chemical Brothers, Richie Hawtin and DJ Hell to Francois Kevorkian, Laurent Garnier, Trevor Jackson and Erol Alkan. It was Erol Alkan that described the track as "a modern day psyche record" and the track became a classic, spawning a legion of copyists intent on imitating the studio technique at the heart of the track. Rather than replicate himself with a swiftly produced facsimile of the track as many and most djs and producers do, Woolford sharply turned left and his next 3 releases were EPs of detroit-inspired techno and deep house for UK stalwart NRK. The tracks '313', 'Sealed In Amber' and 'Demons' proved to be amongst Woolford's best work, and perfectly encapsulated that mood of integrity, rather than cashing on the previous success of 'Erotic Discourse'. Since this time Woolford has given birth to his Intimacy label which is now his first home to explore the myriad of different facets from across the house and techno divide, occasionally dipping into heavy experimentalism as with the collaboration with world-class free-jazz drummer Paul Hession on 'Vanguard', and also releasing the work of other artists such as Jet Project and Mat Playford. Intimacy is set to step up a gear in 2010. Magazine Covers have included DJ Mag August 2006 (with Nic Fanciulli), One Week To Live October 2006, IDJ in January 2008 with a photo shoot from Tate Modern's Doris Salcedo installation "Shibboleth" (after a personal email from Woolford, Salcedo gave her express permission) and an exhaustive 5 page feature to mark the release of his "The Truth" album on 2020 Vision. Irrespective of your position on the dancefloor or listening at home, Paul Woolford's tropes and idiosyncrasies are unmistakable and he has become a force to be reckoned with in modern dance music.
