  • Crossover is such a dirty word. But then these days electronica is such a dirty, raw-sounding field, with the barriers finally pushed over and the noise bands, the beardy laptop junkies, the DJs, the experimentalists, the sound designers, the girls with keytars and the boys with found noise ... They're all playing happily in one big park together - and that park is Fields, 2011. MAX COOPER [2 HRS LIVE, 1 HR DJ] ONE OF THE UK'S MOST UPCOMING FESTIVAL ACTS PREMIERING TRACKS FROM HIS NEW ALBUM [Ableton Live, Akai APC40, iPad/Liine Software] GHOSTING SEASON - THE MANCUNIANS WHO BLEW THE SCALA APART SUPPORTING APPARAT [two guitars | drum pads | loops | "something like an electric cello"] CAPAC - THE THREE PIECE THAT'S TRANSFORMING LIVERPOOL'S LIVE SCENE [drum triggers | keys | vocoder | kaoss pad | live vocalist | sample pad] HIATUS AND SHURA - STARKLY BEAUTIFUL ON LOVE, AND ANGRY SONGS ABOUT REVOLUTION [live vocalist | boss rc50 vocal looper | kaoss pad | keys | loops] PLUS DJ SETS FROM THE ACTS. Fields is a night for those who grew up with bass and bands, Gold Panda and R&B on the stereo. The people who want a rough-and-ready live three-piece on a festival stage - at the same time as the punishing bottom end of the neighbourhood sound system. Each London Fields will showcase live electronics, new bands, three- and four-pieces, duos with extra hardware - danceable experiments. It's live music for the electronica generation: dub with texture and dance tracks played by hand that could fall apart at any second. Influenced by Four Tet, Apparat, Underworld, Jon Hopkins, Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Border Community, Nedry, Sun Drums, Envelope, Olafur Arnulds, Max Richter, Radiohead, Umber, Trentemøller, Burial, Amon Tobin, Shackleton, LONE, Trent Reznor, The BLBX crew, Sei A, Daggereyess, Seekae, Umber, Old Apparatus, John Roberts, Boxcutter, Carl Craig, Clubroot, Ghostek and Synkro; it's London's suck-it-and-see approach writ large, grabbing the best of disparate styles and distilling them into a single electronic moment with an emphasis on letting loose in dark clubs. Headliner? A three hour special set from Max Cooper, showcasing both his producer and his DJ side. One of the UK's fastest rising electronica stars, Max was described by IDJ as having "consistently proved himself to be one of the most peerlessly beautiful recording artists in modern dance music", and his music by Clash magazine as "haunting". Recently he's been special guest at North American electronic showcases Picnik Electronik in Montreal and Decibel Festival in Seattle, closed for Richie Hawtin at 10 Days Off in Ghent, and his collaborations with visual artists led to him headlining the opening night of London's Alpha-Ville arts festival. He'll be premiering new remixes for soundtrack composer Michael Nyman, releases for the label of techno superstar Stephan Bodzin, and tracks from his forthcoming album, due 2012. With Max there's a collection of great electronic bands drawn from across the UK: Mancunians Ghosting Season, whose powerful opening set for Apparat's recent London gig had the audience of jaded industry observers on their feet and screaming; Capac, the frighteningly young elder statesmen of Liverpool's burgeoning electronica scene; and Hiatus and Shura, a duo whose strikingly beautiful looping of vocals recently wowed the Soundwave festival in Croatia. Fri Nov 4 in one room only of the Electrowerkz - 7 Torrens Street London EC1V 1NQ. Tube: Angel. http://fieldsldn.net. 10PM-6AM. Hiatus and Shura on 11PM - be there, their music is really lovely.
