la musique de groj réunit gestes gracieux avec imagerie organique accompagné d'une cadence minimaliste. son obsession pour les sons hautement définis et des narrations est la base de sa musique créative et immersion, permettant des états de tension et relâchement de se fondre en multiples manières imaginatives. ses performances de djing et de live sont toutes deux déchaînées et sensuels, fusionnant l'épaisseur et l'étrangeté du minimalisme avec d'élégantes et soyeuses mélodies.

axel helios n'est pas un concept abstrait, ni une crevette et encore moins un plancton. en fait, axel est un jeune producteur basé à montréal depuis les deux dernières années. ayant produit et fait du djing dans plusieurs styles depuis un très jeune âge, ses études en composition de musique électroacoustiques lui ont permis d'étendre ses horizons musicaux tout en restant vrai à ses idées. influencé par l'idm et l'electronica, un amour pour les sons analogues et les ambiances chaleureuses est né, duquel il combine des rythmiques techno déjantées et des sons acid. à la tête de shabu recordings, sa quête principale, qui alimente sa musique autant que celle de son label, est de créer et promouvoir une musique qui traduit l'idée de « l'âme dans la machine ».

groj grew up in sydney, australia and the capital of the french alps, grenoble. he currently resides in Montreal, his birthplace, where he studied psychology and electro-acoustics. his music connects graceful gestures with organic imagery and a rumbling minimalist cadence. his obsession with highly defined sounds and cunning narratives makes his music crafty and immersive, allowing for tension and release to coil in imaginative ways. the lines between the synthetic and the natural are deeply tangled together. when he composes, groj always uses sounds he has made entirely himself. all the sound sources come either from digital synthesis or his own acoustic recordings – shaking broken glass becomes snares, bicycle wheels spinning through hair become soft crashes, his beard scratching on an old birch stick becomes a shaker etc... his dj and live performances are both wild and sensual, merging thick and bizarre minimalisms with elegant, velvet melodies.
his debut release, ‘edlothia Ep’ came out christmas day 2009, on german techno label klangwelt. a profound impact resounded, as the ep helped confirm the emergence of a new sound in techno music. the bold and soulful border community wave meets the powerful sound design of pioneer stephan bodzin. recognizing the wide innovative appeal of groj’s style, club music icon sasha played a ryan davis remix of edlothia at the miami winter conference 2010 during the ultra festival. the track bereth en eithel also gained lots of attention
throughout the trance and techno scene. it was selected to be part of jay epoch’s proton mixed compilation, mixed in global trance grooves with john fleming by guest dark soul project, and mixed by henry saiz on matt darey’s nocturnal 240.
his next ep, ‘untitled 14’ was released in may 2010 on san francsico’s innovative post-techno label untitled & after received widespread support again. the track beren gardh was charted by max cooper in october 2010, and garnered support from: laurent garnier, deepchild, max cooper, and tom findlay. february 2011 saw groj’s ‘ehf EP’ mark the second release of russian linesman’s loki recordings. groj’s melodic work finally went full circle and landed in the hands of one of his main influences james holden, who played arnica hypericum (mattheis remix) at the awakenings festival in rotterdam this march and solyanka, moscow in april. the ep garnered support from laurent garnier, james holden, max cooper, henry saiz, nick warren, paul hazendonk, ryan davis and many more.
since then, groj worked remixes, which caught the eyes of several key players on the international scene. his remix of cora novoa’s icaro on natura sonoris reached # 44 on the beatport electronica charts. more recently, this may, his remix of mode b’s antwerpen was charted #1 by max cooper, and his max cooper remix of “echoes reality” on traum received widespread support from john digweed, stephan bodzin, umek, steve lawler, mauro picotto, and dave seaman.
groj has now been spotted by some of the major labels on the techno scene, and has been releasing material with traum schallplatten, proton music, and manual music. his live performances have been sonically captivating and generated a lot of attention. last June he was featured at one of canada’s biggest electronic music festival mutek, an event renowned for presenting artists whose music is shaping the future of electronic music.

axel helios is not an abstract concept, nor a shrimp and certainly not a plankter. in fact, axel is a young producer, based in montreal for the past two years. having been producing and djing in multiple musical genres from a very young age, his studies in electroacoustic music composition allowed him to broaden his musical horizons while staying true to his essence. from influences such as idm and electronica stems a love for analogue sounds and moody ambiances, which he combines with glitchy techno rhythms and acid sounds. as head of shabu recordings, his main quest, which fuels his own music as well as his label's, is to create and promote a type of music that translates the idea of «the soul within the machine».
