The incredible rise and fall of superclubs to some may seem like a million nightlife’s ago for some but the world keeps evolving and so does the constant reinvention of music, art, style & culture. In the past 20 years the UK can claim to have labelled and re-packaged every genre possible when it comes to musical style, especially in the dance music realm. Fast forward to the modern world of creativity and the prevailing technology and we now seem to exist in parallel worlds when it comes to the ‘dance’.
The two extremes in mind can simply be compared to the main room club experience verses the cooler bespoke backroom & the alternative mind-set.
What’s really interesting in the current climate is the switch in dance music tempos and the emergence of a new scene where genres are merging into fresh exciting hybrids, a switch to a sound which has no boundaries: sometimes full of twisted and warped collages, mixed with obscure edits, or original compositions and everything in between, fusing cutting edge sampling technology and letting these ‘instant hot productions’ run wild in cyberspace using a whole world of new communications via online shop windows, socialnetworking sites and media platforms such as Soundcloud & Resident Advisor.
Since the early 2000’s an entire legion of producers and new school editors have emerged including Todd Terje, Yam Who? Mark E, and Leo Zero busy creating inspired reworks, modern day mid-tempo sonic affairs allowing the content to be quite diverse, obvious, obscure or downbeat minimalistic. Go online right now and you’ll be inspired and lost in the world of todays studio technicians who are striving to find a new sound, finding its comfort zone between a slower house groove, bumping boogie, epic soul jams, and inspired edits.
Nearly a decade later and we are fully into the digital era, where bedroom musical sculptures appear overnight with a new take on this sound. This cooler, unique and boutique sound still somewhat fairly underground yet is accepted as an integral sound to the scene at events such as the Garden Festival in Croatia, just one of the many independent dance festivals emerging in Europe with an emphasis on great music in a laid back environment, reflecting the mood that big city residents are escaping to these musical melting pots and extending this community feeling rather than swooning to the super club hedonistic scene on the Balearic Islands that has dominated the scene for the previous few decades.
This highly refined sound, which works perfectly as either the pre-club soundtrack, or a great DJ warm up set, yet crosses over as the sound for come down sessions or the beach holiday!
The roll call of producers is endless and ever evolving. Its not only in the hip parts of East London but a world wide phenomenon happening, gently passing by those who claim to have their finger on the pulse; once again leaving the major labels scratching their heads as to what’s going on, a musical revolution for the people by the people, the first truly new underground scene of the 21st century, exciting and dynamic with so many diverse elements that it’s comparable to the early days of Hip Hop, The full story can not be written yet as this sound is still evolving, the key artists are still emerging and the parties just getting going, here we go!
