  • A year ago we introduced the western world to Chida and his ‘Ene’ label alongside COS/MES (Funiki /ESP Institute). We welcome him back for the first leg of his second international tour that’s taking in 10 dates (London, Newcastle, Portugal (inc. Lux Club - Lisbon), Finland, Germany, Russia and Switzerland). There’s great excitement surrounding our reacquaintance with Tokyo’s weird, wonderful best at ReviveHER. ‘‘Ene’ isn’t just any record label. According to their website it is “the record label in Tokyo since 2009”. Although it’s unclear whether the self-proclaiming statement is intentional, little is lost in translation with regard to the music. The catalogue reigns in sublime alien sound-worlds and expresses a beautiful curiosity for the unknown. It’s mellifluous grooves bloom with purpose within the all-consuming swell of atmospheric sound. Unsurprisingly it has caught the attention of the world’s supreme tastemakers. Andrew Weatherall, Ivan Smagghe , Tim Sweeney (for whom Chida has produced a coveted Beats in Space mix) and legendry pioneer Francois K are big fans. During their tour last year, Chida released the 12” Danca. For over half a year Andrew Weatherall continued to play this track and has most recently featured it on his “Masterpiece CD” for Ministry Of Sound. The label is in an auspicious age, and has secured a series of high profile remixes from Prins Thomas, Lovefingers, Eddie C, Seahawks, Dr Dunks, Ray Mang with forthcoming remixes from Discodromo and Soft Rocks by the end of this year, as well as 4 more original releases from the likes of Coyote, an album from the last ReviveHER Lord of the Isles and an Ene Blue series. Label owner Chida’s DJ sets are notoriously existential; they melt right through you like a hypno-disco trip into ‘the Void’. His unswerving explorations interweave threads of afro-rhythm and psychedelia, italo-funk melodies and spun-out sequences all about layers of luscious harmony. This has earned him a reputation as the go to warm up DJ in Japan, for all the visiting DJ major leaguers and resident at Club Eleven. Chida is as passionate about the “party” as he is about his label. His blog dancaholic is a hub for the followers of underground dance music in Japan to keep up to date with Ene and friends. This year Chida has invited inspirational figures over to Japan to play and collaborate on his label. First up was Tiago, then the Ene * Keep It Cheap No.5 Tour with Justin Vandervolgen and Dr.Dunks. followed by an undergram * Ene showcase headlined by the Siberian king of house, Vakula and most recently Lovefingers, to celebrate ENESP001, the remix EP of the Backwoods’ huge global hit from last year “Cloud Nine”. He features in the basement alongside his life-long friend and ‘Force of Nature’ legend DJ Kent as ‘The Backwoods’ (Ene / Force Of Nature / Mule Musiq / Garalude / Tokyo). DJ Kent’s artistic origins provide an interesting contrast to his compatriot. His early work owes much to hip-hop and the sampled house sounds of the 90s. He kick-started his career proper with the record “In The Bush” in 2001, which rose to prominence after Theo Parrish decided he liked it so much that he’d request first rights on the remix. Ten years down the line, and a body of work involving UNKLE, Nigo (BAPE),DJ Shadow, Carl Craig, Recloose, James Murphy, Rub N Tug, Kenji Takimi, Prins Thomas and J Pop superstar Ayumi Hamasaki, he introduces his self titled album under the moniker ‘The Backwoods’ (Ene) -on sale now. (http://www.juno.co.uk/products/the-backwoods/397020-01/) As a producer his versatility is evident. The Japanese Times describe lead track “Cloud Nine” as Italo-disco meets Blade Runner-era Vangelis, whilst the other standout track “Breakthrough” (feat. Sly Mongoose) delivers a distinctly different, yet equally as enthralling NY House Jam feel. They’re both beautiful, and have been heard chasing the daylight off the back of recent sets by DJ Harvey, Weatherall and Smagghe. He’s a frequent guest of state-side luminaries Harvey’s sarcastic parties and Sweeney’s Beats In Space show (with many a BIS mix to his name and a remix for Lauer due on the Beats In Space label). His Vahagn - Trust (The Backwoods Remix) was picked on DJ Harvey's limited X Mix CD this year, which was only available in Japan. In the bar we have three Geordie jitterbugs causing a stir with Last Waltz. This DJ/production trio launched their “Dada” party to create a home for “esoteric club music” amongst the derelict buildings of the North East of England, which has seen them book artists as hip and varied as I-F, Smagghe, Stimming, Joy Orbison, Ewan Pearson and DJ Rahaan. They are now set to release a string of records under the watchful guise of super-hip labels Bristol-based Futureboogie, former ReviveHER Andy Blake’s World Unknown, Jacques Renault’s “Let’s Play House” and Tokyo’s other, Endless Flight (part of Mule Musiq) in the midst of their their very own ‘Object of Distraction’ label. Finally, Last Waltz are allegedly the unnofficial house band of www.tourist-mag.com, a North East based (lack of) culture website that attempts to shine a light on anything that it deems "proper". Live act ColouringIN join us after a 2-year hiatus to reunite for a ReviveHER exclusive in the bar. Classically trained vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, one-time London boy and RH original Henry Bennett returns from forages far a field to breathe life back into dance floor disco-pop. He will be greeted “on stage: by the balmy sounds of trumpeter Dominic Dowbekin and the slap-funk Richard Harrison on Bass. Watch out for releases on ReviveHER records coming soon. Bi-Bop and Nicholas Feel will be in strong support and strong faith on the apples and pears, whilst our mutual friend, budding bedroom producer and Le Baron resident Feon, will be abetting musical proceeds early doors with his mesmerizing tower of power. This Revival reunion of all sorts then, making it the party of the summer!
