House Nation South Africa

  • At the end of the 1980s House from DJ Pierre, Larry Heard and Frankie Knuckles was already the soundtrack of the South African townships and played an important role in the struggle against Apartheid. “Kwaito” became a national specialty. Today House is the dominant youth culture in the entire region. Daniel Best, who has acted as mediator between Reggae and Lounge for many years, presents the latest developments. The music from Liquideep (singer Ziyon und DJ Ryzor), responsible for the hit “Fairytale”, is warm, melodic and irresistibly deep, despite the deliberately “sick” look. A man of the first hour and part of the scene for the last 15 years, 2Lani has played all the clubs from Cape Town to Durban, helped establish the studio Retro Music and founded his own label Do It Now in 2010. The young DJ and producer Jullian Gomes stormed the international stage and – together with his cousin as G Family – the South African charts. He has released on Realtone, Deepshades and others. The slam poet Lazarus Mathebula who reinvented himself in 2009 as The Lazarusman with South African House, will be behind the decks with the longstanding expert André Lodemann, label partner from Daniel Best.
