  • GERD (aka NY Stomp/Geeman) CITIZEN BLACK (Animal Tune, Pyg) Gerd | Bio After 22 years of making of leftfield electronic music, Dutch producer Gerd is still as restless and relevant as ever. The man known as Gert-Jan Bijl has worked under myriad aliases, but Gerd is the one most revered, with releases on Clone, Compost, Ubiquity (and even majors like EMI and Virigin) all combining experimental ideas that touch on everything from liquid ambience to abstract techno via deepest house. Having started to produce in high school during the 80s, the first landmark in a career full of them came in 1991, when Gerd was, after Speedy J, only the second man outside of the city to release on a Detroit label. Released on Richie Hawtin and John Acquaviva’s Malego (a short-lived house subsidiary of Plus 8), ‘Mild at Heart’ set the tone for a career that his since encompassed huge hits (‘Arkest’s Blaze’ which was released, then re-released, selling 30, 000 copies in total) genre-defining IDM long players (This Touch Is Greater Than Moods on Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard’s imprint, Evolution) productions for companies including Nike and TV shows like The Sporanos, gigs at places like The Love Parade, Berghain, Sonar and Fabric, remixes for the influential likes of Moodymann and, at the same time, he has unearthed and nurtured plenty of new talent with two of his own labels, 4lux Recordings and Fortek Organisation. His discography, frankly, bulges in every direction and across a network of important labels and a whole spectrum of electronic sounds. Traces of jazz, Latin, funk and soul all wrap themselves around Gerd’s house and techno beats, both in his own productions and those he selects to deploy when DJing or playing live around the world. It’s that versatility and understanding of sound that have surely won Gerd fans including the respected likes of DJ Koze and Joris Voorn who have remixed his ‘1 In The Morning’ and classic cut ‘For Twelve Minutes She Danced With an Alien’ recently, with well received results. Now working on his fourth album as Gerd, still spinning each week at his Connected club night at Club Waas, Rotterdam and inviting guest likes Jazzanova to play alongside him whilst continuing to reel in the support of techno titans like Ame, Carl Craig and Derrick May, it seems this most prolific and prodigious producer still has plenty left in his tank.
