Secret Soirée presents... Ethyl, BLM & More

  • After the success of our first event @ The Fez Club we've decided at Secret Soiree to take it a little deeper. It gives us great pleasure in releasing our third event of 2013. A lineup of deep underground music... Secret Soiree Presents. . . ETHYL // BLM Ethyl ( Secretsundaze / Tsuba / Cecille ) - Sheffield Debut Tim Hopgood AKA Ethyl, displays a musical knowledge and affinity for the groove far beyond his 25 years. First taking to the turntables at the age of 13 and gaining his first residency as soon as the law allowed at 18, Tim has tapped into the mentality of the dance floor, crafting impeccable selections for hypnotic effect. These skills have seen him win slots at the Capital's underground hotspots, across the UK and at Ibiza's most prestigious venues before a production had even dropped. This synergy with the dance floor soon began to find its way from the decks to the studio, when after completing a sound engineering degree, he began to realise his own unique vision of house. Whether on solo excursions or in tandem with pals Flori or Huxley, productions that bear Ethyl’s name are raw joints, both sonically complex and rhythmically commanding. The eclectic approach of Ethyl's productions are maintained by a deep groove, with nods to early 90s US house & garage and effortless glimmers of Detroit. Sassanids EP, Ethyl’s first production smash, with Huxley, on Cécille Numbers set the bar high and their follow up, The White EP on Tsuba sent the pair chugging rapidly up the house pile claiming lengthy number one spells at a handful of the world's most respected music outlets. Capping off an explosive production flurry with a release on the revered Freerange imprint, this time behind the desk with Flori, marked 2009 as a landmark year for him. 2010 and '11 saw a slew of releases on house purists Quintessentials, further releases on Tsuba and the odd anonymous project. Forthcoming is a release on the newly resurrected secretsundaze singles label. Ethyl’s natural affinity with the floor and devotion to sound design already place him among the hottest emergent talent. Now in highly in demand from the UK and Europe for his tightly programmed, smoothly mixed sets have already seen him share bills with the deep house elite and join a select group of DJs to have represented at London’s secretsundaze. Achieving so much in such a short space of time has not even dented Ethyl’s hunger, looking to push himself and his talents to the limit so as to share his vision of house with the world. BLM ( Fear of Flying / Secretsundaze / Underground Quality ) BLM (aka Ben Micklewright) came through the ranks from bedroom DJ at 15 listening to 2-step and garage, he admits to still dropping the occasional 4/4 garage bomb in his sets even now. Originally from Oxford, During a formative stint at the Midlands’ respected Massive Records he met Jay Robinson, with whom he now runs the much respected Fear Of Flying label. Through their friendship his love of house took root. Ben’s musical scope widened during a sound engineering degree and a move to Nottingham. Now based in London and with the label approaching 5 years and 50 releases, BLM is now finding the time to spread his wings and release with fellow Underground labels. First beginning to experiment in the studio in 2004, it was the launch of the label that allowed him to carve out his own stylish sound undaunted by trends and fashion. Tracks such as the techy Believe In Love, the sublime Gyms Are For Pussies and the Balearic-tinged deep house of Oi Pedro, Do You Do Chips have seen him bubbling under as a producer and helped build Fear of Flying’s status as one of the most consistent labels around. From the ever intriguing work of Schatrax to the fresh sounding Romanian beats that pepper the label’s discography, BLM’s willingness to support producers that think outside the box is clearly evident. Such is the respect of the label that it was able to re-release Sanasol’s Villalobos cained Tambourine Man. BLM’s idiosyncratic take on deep, minimal house [whether it be the garage influence clearly evident in his work or the irreverent track titles] is a breath of fresh air from the earnest posturing of many a serious producer. And the label’s other core artists [Leif to Pawas to Cally] also tread their own individual paths yet nonetheless manage to compliment both BLM and Fear of Flying’s approach. Together they form a well-matched collective. Lazy dance music by numbers it definitely isn’t. Daniel Waterfall ( Fear of Flying / ViVA Music / Area Remote ) A common face around Sheffield's thriving music scene is Daniel Waterfall. More commonly found with his partner in crime Danny Evans, and going by the name Evans&Waterfall. Theres not a lot he hasn't seen along the way. With releases on our headliner BLM's Fear of Flying and Steve Lawler's massive imprint ViVA Music, as well DJ'ing and warming up for some of the biggest in the business, more recently none other than Fred P. Were very pleased to have Danny onboard. Oli Perez ( R.C.R.T ) Local Boy Oliver Garcia Perez has a music collection that most people would be very proud to own. His tastes go way beyond imagination and we are very sure he will be bringing some serious tunage with him on the night. Residents. Kris Aldworth Warren Watson
