  • The Club Contemporary Classical festival (C3) is breaking borders between contemporary classical music and avant-garde pop culture. From Friday, November 8th, until Sunday, November 10th, the festival takes place at UNESCO World Heritage Zollverein in Essen, Germany, for the 2nd time. Again the organizers booked some of the most important international acts of classical and electronic music for some exclusive performances. Top-acts for the three concert nights are Matthew Herbert, Bang on a Can All-Stars and the live-duo of Murcof from Mexico together with the classical pianist Vanessa Wagner from Paris. On top of that Matthew Herbert will also play a DJ-Set during the C3-Clubnight at the extraordinary club Hotel Shanghai. UK-Artist Matthew Herbert is one of the most remarkable and extraordinary persons in electronic club-music and conceptual art. Whether in cooperation with singer Dani Siciliano, as producer of Moloko's Róisín Murphy, as a remixer for Björk or as the leader of his own big band: Since the 1990s the musical all-rounder has been conquering the dance-floors again and again. With his solo projects he gains attention by using unconventional and radical methods of production. Thus, his album's complex, multilayered sounds do often only consist of self-recorded and alienated everyday sounds. During the C3 Festival he will present the German premiere of his new and yet most radical album in a quartet instrumentation. All sounds on "The end of silence" are based on a ten second audio recording taken by a war photographer in 2011 during a bomb attack in Libya. One of the most exciting performers of contemporary classical music is definitely the US-artist collective "Bang on a Can All-Stars". Besides the collaboration with several avant-garde composers they are well known for their performances of path-breaking compositions of Steve Reich, Philip Glass or Terry Riley. At the C3 they will play their re-interpretation of Brian Eno´s ambient music blueprint "Music for Airports". In the music of Fernando Corona alias Murcof dark sounds from classical music, film soundtrack and jazz emerge in combination with abstract, clicking electrobeats to perfection. With his debut-album "Martes" (2001) he attained international success crossing genre borders. Collaborations with Erik Truffaz, Talvin Singh or Francesco Tristano followed. In Essen he will give one of his rare performances together with the Parisian pianist Vanessa Wagner. Further acts of the C3-Festival are the British-French band project Piano Interrupted from Denovali Records, the German-Bulgarian Techno-DJ and concept-artist Stefan Goldmann from the surrounding of the Berlin Berghain and the Duo Rotterdam from Vienna, who combine Techno-music together with classical instruments like cello, flute and tuba. With Tesla Mode the festival also presents a project of students from the ICEM (Institute for computer music and electronic media) of the Folkwang University of arts. The aim of the C3 Festival is the connection of contemporary classical music and electronic club-culture forming new kinds of creative spaces for music and performance. C3 is a cross-national network project between Berlin, Essen and Danzig. The festival is hosted by the Berlin agency "Piranha Kultur" in collaboration with the Stiftung Zollverein. The program was curated by Fabian Lasarzik (Essen), Jennifer Dautermann (Berlin) and Michal Jacaszek (Gdansk).
