  • Blahnket is proud to present all the way from Los Angeles the beats and rhymes of JONWAYNE. Armed with a huge sound system and a colossal lineup sourced from around the country, the underground haven of Digress will play host to one of the most anticipated nights of the year! JONWAYNE [STONES THROW/ LA] MUTE X ROLEO [BIG VILLAGE/SYD] SILENT JAY [THE OPERATIVES/MEL] BURNER COLLECTIVE SHOWCASE DEAF CAT MORE TBA Jonwayne came onto the Los Angeles music scene by way of the east Los Angeles club Low End Theory circa 2008-09, then emerging as the epicenter of a new generation of hip-hop beat makers: Flying Lotus, Gaslamp Killer, Nosaj Thing, Kutmah, Daedelus. Fresh out of high school, Jonwayne jumped in with homemade rap mixtapes and immersed himself in the scene. "It felt like a golden age," he says, "it was very inspiring." He first became known as a producer, releasing the instrumental album Bowser (2011) – but it was his over-sized skill on the mic that caught the attention of Stones Throw's Peanut Butter Wolf, who signed him to record an album as an MC. As Jon set to work on his debut rap project, he let his presence be known with a series of tapes: Cassette, Cassette 2 and Cassette 3. Each was unplanned, the releases prompted by Jon’s prolific output. And by this time even lawyers for the tobacco conglomerate Phillip Morris took notice of Jonwayne, serving him with a cease & desist notice for a cassette that looked like a pack of Marlboros. His latest output Rap Album 1 which LA Weekly touted as One of the best rap albums of the year was made over the course of a year in a makeshift studio-cum-bedroom set up at the Stones Throw offices, the work emerged from dusk to dawn recording sessions. (He produced most of the tracks himself.) The work showcases his almost Shakespearean ability to shift from dark to light, from the morbid to the comic. Its beats and bars are forward thinking, but the subject is Wayne himself - here and now. "This is the first album that fully encompasses what I want to do and all the parts of who I am," he says. Jon Wayne is the MC/producer's birth name. The Hollywood cowboy, John Wayne (real name Marion Morrison) took his famous screen name from Jonwayne's great-great-great-great-great uncle, General "Mad Anthony" Wayne, a player in the American Revolutionary War. True story. Now Jonwayne's taking back the name - what goes around comes around. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Supported by Mute x Roleo [Big Village/Syd] A prime example of what happens when two crazy people come together to create at Big Village HQ. Roleoʼs driving Afro/Jungle style beat meets Muteʼs eccentric ragga style flow, screaming and chanting exaltations to life. Fans will recognise Muteʼs melodic style and conscious lyrics from his collaboration with Verbaleyes, ‘Lingua Franca’ which was one of the stand out tracks on the Big Village compilation ‘Big Things Volume Two’ and was added to Triple J rotation in 2012. But the MUTE X ROLEO story goes back to their collaboration ‘Forever Breaks’ on ‘Big Things Volume One’ which was named as FBI’s album of the week and sparked a partnership that would eventually become MUTE X ROLEO. “This is what Africa/Australia taught me, Reverse Polarities nurtured and Big Village encapsulated. Raw, concrete jungle meets barefoot bushman. The rest is sweat and fire, gyrating bodies in the moonlight.” Mute MC Silent Jay [The Operatives/Mel] Silentjay AKA Alejandro Jay Abapo is a 21yr old beat-maker, producer, multi-instrumentalist and singer based in Melbourne. Jay plays the saxophone in up and coming experimental-cinematic jazz quintet Demian and sings with internationally acclaimed future-soul group Hiatus Kaiyote, but Silentjay is his individual creative outlet. Now a solid staple in the Melbourne beat scene, he has supported the likes of Gaslamp Killer, Hudson Mohawke, Shlohmo & Mono/Poly as well as well as recently performing on world renown Boiler Room TV and the Let Them Eat Cake NYD Festival. Burner Collective Showcase Canberra’s very own Burner Collective has been showcasing some home grown sounds over the past few months via their bandcamp releases. With a keen ear for fresh beats and pieces Burner's main men Creamcrops and VUDU! will be dropping local goods featured on these releases for our pleasure.
