As well as having their most successful release to date (‘Walk in Stomp’ by the Mighty Hor) featured in the Juan Maclean’s hugely popular BBC 1 Essential Mix, the Commonwealth-born and Berlin-based label organised a series of awesomely radical parties at venues like Suicide Circus, Farbfernseher and a number of secret venues around the city. It’s a safe bet that their first night at the wonderful Loftus Hall is a sign of even bigger and better things to come in 2014 - which is good news for clubbers, as Skrufix’s three point agenda (anti-pigeonholing / anti-serious / pro-dancing) has become more relevant than ever before! To prove the point, they are celebrating the launch of the new Turtlez EP by presenting a line-up distinguished nearly as much by its variety as by its impeccable quality: Headline act House of Black Lanterns is the latest artistic guise of recent Boiler Room guest Dylan Richards, formerly known as King Cannibal when working on Ninja Tune, and as Zilla on Warp Records. Championed by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, hand-picked by Björk to work on her recent ‘Biophilia’ project, selected by Liam Howlett to remix the Prodigy and invited to compile retrospectives of the Warp and Ninja Tune catalogues as Zilla and King Cannibal respectively, Richards is no stranger to critical recognition when it comes to twisted, layered soundscapes. Retaining the earlier influence of DJ Krust’s sprawling drum & bass soundscapes, House of Black Lanterns sees Richards develop his sound to incorporate the dub-inflected techno textures of Rhythm & Sound whilst nodding to the catchy, yet occasionally bleak floorfillers of Trax, all inspired by the modern noir visual style of Michael Mann. Aashton is the new alias of Brighton based DJ and producer Dominic Ashton, former lead singer of the band Kinema and one-half of House duo Aashton & Swift. The debut A&S EP ‘Holy House’, released on Body Work (Waze & Odyssey/LPZ/Semedo) was an instant hit supported by a wide range of DJs from Horse Meat Disco to Sister Bliss, featured in DJ Mag and on sites such as XLR8R and Data Transmission, and named one of Bleep.com’s ‘Tracks of 2012’. Dominic’s solo career has hit the ground running with a remix for Australian band Clubfeet out now, and a remix of Italian producers Ajello and a slew of original EPs on Loungin’ Recordings, Body Work and Delayed Audio all set for release over the next few months. Skrufix’s own Turtlez embody the recklessly free-thinking spirit of the label to great effect by combining influences from breaky UK styles like jungle and garage with the tempos and rhythms that suit Berlin’s dancefloors - or, as Resident Adviser put it, combining “contemporary house sensibilities with rave cassette abandon”. The dynamic duo consisting of highly-motivated label boss Things With Wings and notorious layabout The Crane look forward to presenting the follow-up to their well-received debut ‘I Want To Fly’ at Loftus, as well as many more upcoming Skrufix gems. They will be ably supported in their task by the regular SKRU DJ display team of Shanghai Burton and Ralphalfa. Patrons are strongly advised to choose their footwear with a view to extended periods of dancing.
