  • Berlin Atonal returns this August for another round of first-class musical offerings, world premieres, specially commissioned projects, installations, seminars, workshops and afterparties; all hosted in the spectacular abandoned powerplant in the heart of Berlin that it calls home. To open the 2014 edition on Wednesday, August 20th, Berlin Atonal has invited the legendary Ensemble Modern and London's Synergy Vocal ensemble to perform live in the gigantic main hall a piece widely regarded as one of the peaks of post-war music: Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians. Seen as the high point of his tradition-changing experimentation with phasing, abstraction and looping; this piece is a hallucinogenically hypnotic journey to the very heart of modern music. After this singular opening concert, the festival will not slow down until its finale, four fully-loaded days later, on Sunday 24. August. Berlin Atonal is delighted to announce that it will host the very first Cabaret Voltaire live performance in over 20 years.Throughout their long story beginning in Sheffield in 1978, Cabaret Voltaire, in its various iterations, have been credited with founding and destroying genres, introducing new musical technologies while simultaneously modifying and developing beyond them. Cabaret Voltaire’s blend of dance music, techno, dub, house and experimentalism made them, without a doubt, one of the most influential acts of the last 40 years. The fabled Cabaret Voltaire live show has changed considerably since it was the first live act ever at the legendary Manchester's Hacienda club, but in outlook and spirit remains the same. With a line up now consisting solely of machines, multi-screen projections and Richard H Kirk, the first Cabaret Voltaire performance of the 21st Century promises to be formidable. When the now-fabled Aquaplano records were first released in 2008 and 2009, they were distinctly out of step with the way techno appeared to be heading. Tribal rhythms and ambient textures sketched out a much more heady, psychedelic form of techno. Italians Donato Dozzy and Nuel would go a long way towards creating the template for a brand of deep, atmospheric techno that has become much more prominent in the years since. And while many have sought to imitate this sound, few - if any - have matched what first emerged from the Aquaplano sessions. Almost 6 years later, and after a tremendously received re-release on Spectrum Spools, the two masters have prepared the first ever Aquaplano live show. Atonal is also happy to present the first showcase in Berlin on the groundbreaking 4DSOUND System. Developed by a team of engineers and sound designers in Amsterdam, the specially designed 4DSOUND system allows spatiality of sound to be designed in great detail by controlling parameters such as distance, elevation, angle and diffusion. These parameters can be controlled in real-time or edited in arrangement, as well as conditioned by the angle and direction of one’s movement in space. 4DSOUND introduces a creative practice of physicality, space and movement in music that has until now remained unexplored. Showcased on 4DSOUND will be Mexican composer Murcof, Norwegian ambient master Biosphere and Raster-Noton stalwart Senking along with a specially commissioned installation by the world renown visual crew AntiVJ and sound designer Thomas Vaquié. Among the names also performing on the main stage is Canada’s most celebrated sound magician Tim Hecker, legendary UK drum-n-bass and jungle outfit Source Direct. In Aeternam Vale and his influential blend of punk nihilism, Kraftwerk roboticism and cold, aggressive industrialism in a special live show. Sendai – the exploratory collaborative project of Peter van Hoesen and Yves de Mey – are invited to stretch out even further into the varied and daring sonic domain they are making their own, a blended mixture of synthesised patterns and impeccable sound design. Berlin Atonal 2014 will also host the premiere live A/V shows of the enigmatic Headless Horseman, as well as Milton Bradley’s darkly apocalyptic project The End of All Existence, Neel's shapeshifting A/V project which debuted at MUTEK Montreal in May, James Ginzburg's new Bleed Turquoise enterprise and that of highly regarded Blackest Ever Black artist Dalhous. The Atonal stage will also premiere the live show of box-fresh collaboration UF (aka Samuel Kerridge and OAKE) and a very rare live performances by Abdulla Rashim and Miles Whittaker. As last year, the Sunday event will be co-produced by Berlin’s CONTORT team who have curated an incredible program including some of the above names to crescendo up to a heroic festival finale later that night. A few additions to the aftershow party roster can also be announced: Our Circula Sound boss and Blueprint favourite Sigha, Swedish duo Shxcxchcxsh and Young Echo artist Vessel. Also preparing their first live show in Berlin since the release of their highly acclaimed collaborative album are Millie + Andrea, aka Miles Whittaker (Demdike Stare) and Andy Stott. Many, more names are still to be announced for the Opening Concert (featuring Steve Reich's Music for 18 Musicians), the main stage festival program and the extensive aftershow schedule. Festival passports are still on sale, with individual day passes becoming available after the full schedule is released. The Festival Passport does not include entry into the Opening Concert on August 20th. **** Berlin Atonal 2014 Ensemble Modern + Synergy Vocals play Steve Reich: Music for 18 Musicians Cabaret Voltaire (live) Donato Dozzy & Nuel present Aquaplano Sessions (live, World Premiere) Ike Yard (live) Monoton presents Monotoprodukt 07 (Live A/V, World Premiere) Imaginary Softwoods (Live, European Premiere) Tim Hecker (Live A/V) Murcof (Atonal 4D) Source Direct Max Loderbauer (Live A/V) In Aeternam Vale (live) TV Victor (Live A/V) Biosphere (Atonal 4D) Neel (Live A/V, European Premiere) FIs (Live A/V) Dasha Rush presents Antarctic Takt (Live A/V, World Premiere) Sendai (Live A/V) The End of All Existence (Milton Bradley) (Live A/V, World Premiere) UF (Samuel Kerridge and OAKE) (Live, World Premiere) Miles Whittaker (live) Headless Horseman (Live A/V, World Premiere) Senking (Atonal 4D) Bleed Turquoise (Live A/V, World Premiere) Dalhous (Live A/V, European Premiere) Abdulla Rashim (live) Dscrd (Live A/V) Helm (live) Aftershows: Millie & Andrea (Miles Whittaker and Andy Stott) (live) Scion (live) Pinch Jonas Kopp Sigha Powell Sendai Soundsystem SHXCXCHCXSH (live) LADA (Dasha Rush + Lars Hemmerling) (live) ADMX-71 (live) Roly Porter Stanislav Tolkachev (live) Ninos Du Brasil (live) Nuel Killing Sound Vessel James Ginzburg + Paul Purgas (Emptyset) Marcellis Untidy Peder Mannerfelt John Connell Mischa Skratch Andrei Oid Andres Zacco Jen Allen S13 + more TBA
