grooveman Spot
Hailing from Sendai city, Japan, grooveman Spot (a.k.a DJ Kou-G) is known as one of the key player from world renowned Japan music label / Production “Jazzy Sport”.
He caught the musical bug as a teenager, first as a hiphop dancer and then a DJ. Heavily influenced by the legendary Funkmaster Flex, Japan's own King of Diggin' DJ Muro as well as the pioneering Japanese hiphop group Microphone Pager, he formed his own duo "ENBULL" with MC U-Zipplain in 1996. Mentored by renown beatmaker / DJ Watarai and reminisces the classic sound of US hiphop legends Pete Rock and DJ Premier. Having swapped beats and ideas for many years with fellow Sendai native DJ / beatmaker Mitsu The Beats (GAGLE), the two ended up as label mates under Jazzy Sport for their eclectic, world class quality solo albums.
On grooveman Spot debut album "Eternal Development" (2007), his solid beats synced international collaborations with Medaphoar a.k.a MED (Stones Throw), Capitol A, Count Bass D, J*Davey, Grap Luva, MC Invincible and O.C. and Japanese MC U-Zipplain, Hunger (GAGLE). The follow-up 2nd Album "Change Situation" (2010) continued world class collaborations with Grap Luva, Kissey Amploud and Muhsinah. With tracks featured in Gilles Peterson’s renown label, Brownswood Records compilation “Brownswood Bubblers Six" and "Worldwide Family Vol.1" (compiled by Lefto & Simbad), grooveman Spot built up his worldwide reputation and proved to be an upcoming Japanese producer to check for. His production showed new dimension on 3rd album “Runnin' Pizza" (2011) and 4th album “Paradox" (2012), which include essence of 80's boogie, beatdown house, cosmic funk, disco edits were well supported by underground house and disco freaks in the world. His beat science with funk elements with minimalism took it deeper on 5th Album "Began To Notice” and it turned to solid techno, Chicago house twisted with dubby and african taste.
With his such wide range soundscape and vision on production, his DJ style is also updating today. It’s absolutely unique, eclectic and of course groovy with his incredible music selection as a hardcore crate digger. Not only hiphop but also soul / funk / jazz / disco / boogie / house / techno and even some Japanese old school stuff to mix with his incredible mixing skills.
