Social Studies presents: Roy Dank

  • We've had some pretty crazy nights this 2014. Kenny Dope was in Da House. We got to feel the Good vibes from Mister Saturday night. Had Mike Servito give us a "Made in Detroit" Set. Technics brought Baltimore to Boston. The Beautiful Swimmers made us forget there was snow in January. We had Jacques Renault cheer us up, and Mike Simonetti ACIDIZE our basement. If you were here last month for Moodymann, you know words can't describe what happened. Here at Social Studies we know one thing though; To trust the DJ. And trust us, it pays off. That said we are really happy to bring back ROY DANK, one of our dearest friends and one who's been a big inspiration to the sound of Social Studies. We are lucky to have known Roy this long, experienced and seen the massive contribution his "Wurst" label had on the NYC Scene. Roy has recently become a Boston Resident. So friends, let's give him a warm welcome. If you are not familiar with this party instigator, let me give you some reasons to come POP YOUR FUNK. (1) In 2003, Roy teamed up with contemporary disco hero Brennan Green to produce the Pop Your Funk monthly at the now-legendary New York venue, APT. The duo were responsible for bringing such luminaries as Andrew Weatherall, Maurice Fulton, and Martin Moscrop from A Certain Ratio to New York, as well as playing host to Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas' stateside debut. In the process, Roy and Brennan introduced the city to the burgeoning sounds of what is now called "nu-disco", not to mention expertly mixing up these new records with classic no wave, disco, electrofunk, rock, house and the odd industrial record. A no holds barred attitude that has since become a new eclectic style championed in many a discerning club the world over. (2) Shortly after Pop Your Funk went out with a bang - the aforementioned Norwegian disco blowout - Roy launched the Wurst Edits series, first with his own takes on lost disco unclassics, and subsequently introducing his friends Runaway (Jacques Renault & Marcos Cabral) and Eamon Harkin (of Mister Saturday Night) to the masses. These early releases were featured on Optimo's much ballyhooed Pitchfork mix, the epic Lindstrøm and Prins Thomas Essential Mix for BBC Radio 1, and The Glimmers last proper mix, Eskimo V, all in 2007. (3) By 2008, Roy was ready to move on and cook bigger sausages. The Wurst became a proper label, and it also became a clothing company. Roy is a highly creative, highly DIY control freak and we mean that as a complement. His taste in music could probably land him an A&R job at a Major Label, but that's not what Roy's about. By the time the Wurst Compilation compilation came out in 2011, the output was short of incredible. There were releases by Brennan Green, the "Neurotic Drum Band" (AKA Elliot Taub & John Selway), Disco Outfit "Midnight Magic", Portland's Analog-House group "The Miracles Club", Chicago Damn, Eli Escobar, Remixes by Abe Duque, and of course the music he produced with pal Nick Chacona as Beg To Differ. And while the Wurst remains in history as a "New York" moment, These Days Roy continues the music train with a new label called Free Association and an array of other interesting project. (4) As a DJ, Roy's travelled all over the world. He's played D-Edge in Brazil, Paris, Sydney, Reykjavik, Miami, Instanbul, A Club called Rhonda in LA, Berlin, Montreal, Helsinki…You guys get the point. He gets around. (5) 5 Sets on Tim Sweeney's Beats in Space. What do you call that in Poker? Jokes Aside. We are pumped about this Party. Pumped to have Roy in Boston and pumped to celebrate almost 3 years of Social Studies. And if there's something Roy's taught us, is that "The Wurst is Yet to come…"
